Q stands for Quartermaster. It's a job, not a name.

EDIT: Though I will concede maybe people get it from the fact that in the Craig films at least M is established to come from a name. The Q thing still bothers me however.

Anyway, after seeing a thousand names for Q, ranging from silly to too common to really damn weird... sorry, OP, but while your logic is sound and I would usually agree with you, I really like Quillian >>;;
(Q does stand for "Quartermaster", indeed, but since in the Craig movies it was such a coincidence M was both "Olivia Mansfield" and "Garreth Mallory"; it doesn't seem too much of a stretch.)
