Someone is mixing up James Bond and Men in Black. :P

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Kinda off topic, but he does totally look like a Quentin, though.

PFFFFFT Firemanigel. If I get a dog, that is what I shall name it.

Stealing this idea.

This bothers me too.

Q stands for Quartermaster. It's a job, not a name.

I saw some crossover fanart involving that particular Q where the other character's speech bubble addressed him using "Quentin" and I was really thrown off thinking: wait, what? Since when did Q stand for a name? Isn't it Quartermaster? They even say that word in Skyfall!

EDIT: Though I will concede maybe people get it from the fact that in the Craig films at least M is established to come from a name. The Q thing still bothers me however.

All of the explicitly named Ms, except for Admiral Hargreaves (played by Robert Brown from Octopussy until License to Kill) have surnames that begin with M - Messervy (the books, and all the films where he's played by Bernard Lee - as a bonus, his first name is Miles), McTarry (1967 Casino Royale), Mansfield (Dench), and Mallory (Feinnes).

Well, it's not too far-fetched. The original 'M' designation was supposed to have come from the real-life head of MI6 habit of signing their names with initials, ever since Captain Mansfield Smith-Cumming in the WWI era. So there is a history of MI6 titles being associated with names.

Q itself does stand for quartermaster, though.

This sounds like an interesting idea for a sci-fi story where everyone is assigned a career after coming of age and the career is tacked onto their legal name to easily identify them/so they can't step out of their assigned role in life.

Well, damn o_o I thought I was the only one on this fandom at F!S, and it's the second day in a row I see Skyfall secrets. (And with Q, no less <3)

Anyway, after seeing a thousand names for Q, ranging from silly to too common to really damn weird... sorry, OP, but while your logic is sound and I would usually agree with you, I really like Quillian >>;;

(Q does stand for "Quartermaster", indeed, but since in the Craig movies it was such a coincidence M was both "Olivia Mansfield" and "Garreth Mallory"; it doesn't seem too much of a stretch.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That is annoying. Especially since a quick trip to wiki would straighten that mix up out.
lynx: (Default)

[personal profile] lynx 2014-01-25 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Why? There are only two "named" Q's on existence... One was referred as "The Armorer", not as Q. And the other was Q'ute (Ann Reilly). Since Craigverse is kind of a reboot for the franchise, I'm not sure the wiki applies.

Robert's a perfectly lovely name!

I dunno, Quentin's a real name. And it's kind of a nerdy name. And he's kind of a nerdy guy.

It's less like Doctoryan or whatever and more like D is for Devin.

To be fair, I think a lot of people thought that James Bond was just a job title too, until Skyfall happened and poked some holes in that theory.

Aw. I really need to get around to watching Skyfall, especially so I can read those fics with "Quentin" and get weirded out by the trend with everyone (or the minority of everyone?).

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Well that's just silly. As others have said, Q is a job title and not a name.

Given the thing with M, I don't think you can say that definitively.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe he's called Q because he signs things 'Q' and he's Quartermaster. Maybe he changed his name after he got the job.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 07:07 am (UTC)(link)
I find him quite attractive. It makes me wish I could stomach Bond movies so I could watch the one with him in it. :) But even when I like the actors, I can rarely if ever sit through a Bond movie. They are really, really not aimed at me! Female who doesn't want to watch too much violence and NO skeevy sex? "F-U! Not our viewer!" Which is fair enough, I guess, since I'm not in that "magic" demographic.

since he only has 10 minutes of screen time, and most of that is spent trying to repair the boneheaded move of hooking the arch villain's computer directly into Mi6's network just so Q can splash it on the big center screen, his code name should probably be Quiche.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow someone does this? Don't they know about Bond? There have been a few Qs and they were totally not named starting with the letter Q .
XD I feel your pain.
