To be fair, I think a lot of people thought that James Bond was just a job title too, until Skyfall happened and poked some holes in that theory.

Up until Skyfall, it wasn't really a misunderstanding so much as an extremely popular fanon, that 007/James Bond was a title rather than an actual name. And seeing as the Craig movies are meant to be a reboot, a lot of people now just assume that he is the source of the title, but it's still a title.
