Like just try bringing up the fact that Disney movies rely on rigid gender roles and racist tropes in a discussion, and you will have a whole hoard of people on your back, screaming at you that Disney movies are feminist. FEMINIST.
No one ever said Disney was sexist and racist, but GOD, they're not perfect either.
Just, god. Disney. If someone wants to explain it to me, go ahead.

Yeah. I ate my words. That film was amazingly cute and still is one of my favourites to watch when I'm feeling blue and need to laugh for about 90 minutes. I was shocked when I discovered that apparently among Disney fans (not critics)...it wasn't well thought of at the time. I guess for the fans it's not a typical Disney film or something *shrug*

I don't doubt that what you're talking about happens (and all the other people here who are talking about fanatics who will hear nothing bad about Disney) but this is just so far from my experience.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)As an adult, what really makes me love Disney isn't just the "cute" or the "nostalgia" but the level of effort they put into the things they make. Yeah, no, they've got their problems with gender roles, but artistically speaking they've almost always been pushing the envelope with how they can tell a story (ignoring that dark period in the lat 90's with all the crappy sequels). I mean, you can say "some of their movies are cute" but honestly...most of their animated movies are masterworks of skill and dedication. For the majority of their existence (again, ignoring that terrible, dark time), they've never really bought into the usual thought of "it's for kids; we can phone it in." No, they're going to accurately draw the architecture of Notre Dame. They're going to spend months studying lions and meerkats and hyenas just so they can make their animated animals move right. They are going to slow-motion-film the rain until they understand the science of exactly HOW a raindrop falls and splashes, and then they are going to accurately animate that in a three-minute sequence.
And then the Parks.
Yeah, there's plenty to be cynical about with the Parks. People trap, big business, etc. But still. The difference between Disney World and, say, Six Flags is just astounding. It's not enough for them to throw some happy plastic-and-metal characters or some goofy signs up. They create an atmosphere in such exact detail. Just being in the park, you can tell the how much the folks putting it together want it to be special. They don't just want you to go from a roller coaster to a boatride. They want you to have an experience, and they really do go out of their way to make that experience special, in big and little ways. Nevermind the whole "touch-up painting every night" thing.
There are so many companies and parks and what-not that just figure, well, it's entertainment, people won't really care if we fudge this or do a half-hearted version of that. But Disney really does put the effort into making it because Walt Disney, for all of his many faults, was a perfectionist, and genuinely wanted everything to be as good as it possibly could be.
