I don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Context:

Code Geass is an anime where an imperialistic nation (Holy Empire of Britannia, used to be the British Empire but Things Happened) has taken over and enslaved a lot of other nations, including Japan. The nations conquered are called Areas and assigned a number.

Japan is Area Eleven, the Japanese people are called Elevens and the superficial plot of the anime is the liberation of Japan from its oppressor. (And the guy in the secret wants to kill his dad.)

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
SA:

Elevens is a racist slur, in case I didn't make that clear. They are considered second class citizens and treated as such, so the OP calling Japanese people Elevens is rather dickish. Though OP probably thought it was edgy, what with using it ~ironically.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a fictional racial slur.

Code Geass is one of the many Japanese media demonstrating how victimized and special Japanese people are. OP calling Japanese people "elevens" is stupid at best irl, considering it's not a real insult.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a fictional slur used against people who actually exist.

It's certainly not as bad as real life slurs, but it's still weird as fuck to use, since, you know, Japanese people are real people and you should probably call them "Japanese people" when referring to them.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I absolutely agree it is stupid (and weird) to call real Japanese people Elevens. If there is a racist element, it's not in the term itself, but in OPs inability to call people what they actually are. If OP automatically goes to the word "Elevens" when she thinks of Japanese people, she probably needs to put Code Geass down and go outside more often.

But it's still ridiculous to act like Elevens is a word with any real power, especially considering Code Geass is written by a Japanese person, and the "Elevens" in question are the heroes of the show.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Nice assuming there. If OP had some issues with Japanese people, maybe (more like probably) it's because of how they are as a society or the horrible things they did and never apologized and not because of their race. Stop assuming that every time someone criticizes a non white group is because of racism.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
err... what? dude, you're taking this conversation to a whole 'nother level.

also, if OP has issues with Japanese people, she is probably racist. if she has issues with Japan's government or social policies, maybe you'd have a point but... are you trolling?

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
You're making no sense. So (fictional examples) if I despise Japanese people for the rape of Nanking I'm racist, but if I despise American people for the genocide of the Native Americans I'm not racist. ...Okay.

Stop with this stupidity. It's only racism when you have issues because of race. Only then.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Go home, you're drunk.

I wouldn't say that I despise them, but I dislike how fucking racist and sexist they are.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
okay, racist

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
BUTBUTBUT THE AMERICANS WERE WHITE.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Saying you hate the entirety of a group of people for any reason is racist. Someone who says "I hate Americans" is equally an idiot to someone who says "I hate Japanese people." It's stupid and racist (well, American isn't a race, prejudiced?)

Excuse me, despising a whole bunch of people for something historical is prejudiced. You can have your reservations - but if you're talking "hate" to a point where it would interfere with interacting with someone who's Japanese, then yes, you're prejudiced. If you're white in a society where white people are privileged, then that's likely to stem from, and cause harmful prejudice.

If you're of a prejudiced bent, you're also less likely to realise that the actions of "races" are rarely worse than each other, and that it is possible to dislike collective political actions or prejudices, without becoming personally prejudiced yourself. I mean, if you're Western white, try talking to some Muslim people, and discover they're pretty nice average people. Ditto Japanese.

However, if you have been personally hurt or at threat from a group, it is harder to separate these things. It doesn't mean not trying. Example, an Australian Jewish friend who detests her family's Zionism back in Israel, but upon nearly being blown up in a cafe when she visited, really consciously struggled not to feel undue hate towards all Palestinians.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-26 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically: It's racist (and otherwise icky) to make hate the Japanese. It is not actually racist to hate Japan (for, as mentioned up-thread, such things as the rape of Nanking) - as long as you don't then go and generalise to "that's what the Japanese are like".

Exactly. It's fucked up to use it even if it's not a real slur.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-25 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You sound Eleven.
