Re: Poor/Rural/Southern Living. World of Warcraft.

Okay. Bit of background. I grew up in a town called Union with a population of about 8000. The white and black population was about 50/50.

I guess the big thing people hear about the South is that it is super racist. In my experience this is not really true. There are some racist people (I knew neo-nazi) but it seems that the North has more racial divides than we do. I also went to college in the capitol (Columbia) and never saw any big racial problems. This may be because people are not divided all that much, especially in school.

Southern people are definitely slower than people who have grown up in the North. We even have a slow as mess Southern drawl.

I am not sure exactly what to talk about so here are a specific thing I can cover. Funerals. In my experience funeral procedure is VERY different.

I have been to several funerals in SC. I have been to a couple in CT. The funeral itself is pretty much the same. But in the South (and Midwest from what I have seen) we have police escorts. The entire funeral procession is escorted from the church to the cemetery. Cars that are on the other side of the road generally pull over and wait until the procession is done going by.

In CT, everyone just left the church and made their way the cemetery as they could. So while we were conducting the part of the funeral at the cemetery people showed up randomly as they got through traffic.

Also in the South people bring food and such for the wake. So it is basically a potluck. The two wakes I went to in CT had catering. That was a bit weird to me because that means there are strangers just walking in and out of the area preparing food.

I can answer some specific questions?

Interesting. Yeah, one of the big things I've always heard about was the racial issues in the South though I didn't really know the specifics.

Well, I do have specific questions on the weather around where you live (yes I know, talkin' bout the weather but I'm actually curious :D). How warm/cold does it get in the summer/winter? I've been to California in the winter and it's sort of cold but not freezing and I hear that Florida doesn't get that cold. Is it the same in other southward states?

Mmmm. It doesn't generally get super cold (maybe 30 degrees one or two days a year). We almost never get large snowfalls. During the summer it can get abut 100 degrees or so. But the worst part during the summer is the humidity.

Hey now - We talk slow, but we're not actually *slow* :P [Teasing, teasing.]

Re: The racial stuff

I actually heard some interesting stuff from one of my profs that was raised in the South but went to school up North [and was black, which is part of why she said she noticed this]. But yeah, there's a much bigger social divide up north than there is in the south. Like...The south had the heavy De jure segregation for a long time, but once that started breaking down people starting mixing it up a lot more since they were going out of their way to break down the social segregation at the same time which...just hasn't happened up north.

/coughs Sorry, this was one of the bigger parts of what she studied so she talked about the differences quite a bit.

That is interesting! And yeah, that might be a reason.
