Re: Russia (seems like we're doing countries)

Hey, I did warn it was a silly question. [Bear in mind, where I live it's basically one party running everything, with other parties trying [and generally failing] to get anywhere.]

IDK, the "Yay, olymics!" thing was assumption since - Sochi aside - that always seems to be the reaction have to a greater or lesser degree. As for Sochi...all I've really heard about is the terrorist threat and the warnings being given to people travelling there.

Ouch for the people carrying the flame though! How'd that one guy die? [If you don't mind my asking].

Ah, I see. Well, Russia is essentially the same way - the government is controlled by the United Russia, our main party. All the elections are controlled by the UR, the policies are set by the UR... everything is UR. There are, technically, other parties, but in actuality they, too, are controlled by - guess who. They are mostly political muppets (refer to the Just Russia party, for example). Other than that, a fair number of them are batshit insane. Thus, one dude (Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of the LDPR), constantly says that his main goal upon coming to power would be to conquer Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, and all the other countries between Russia and the Pacific. Once he demanded that Tartu (an Estonian city) be returned to Russia because it used to be Russian in the Russian Empire times???? I cannot.

There's actual opposition, too, but it's not very influential, and it doesn't get any seats in the Parliament.

Yeah, the terrorist threat in connection with Sochi definitely exists. We've recently had an explosion on a railway station in Volgograd. About 50 people were injured, I think, and 18 killed. A policeman threw himself at the terrorist and died while trying to save people (he did save a fair number of lives by doing that).

As to the Olympic flame carrier, I seem to remember it being a heart attack. Nothing nasty - he wasn't burnt alive or somesuch.

Wow...that last one is a little...um...Interesting. But at least you kind of have entertainment with them? [At least, that's how we view that kind of thing here...then again we also assume we're going to be screwed to hell and back no matter what anyways. So.]

I'm sorry to hear that. [That the connection is there I mean, not that he managed to save lives!]

Ahh, well it's good that it wasn't anything nasty. It does sound like you guys are having some really weird luck with the torch though!

Yes, we do so love political satire :D

Just in case, I didn't imply that the Volgograd explosion was in connection with Sochi - I think that unlikely. I merely indicated that there are terrorist attacks in Russia happening at more or less regular intervals, and that Sochi, a huge international project as it is, has some potential of attracting terrorists that are already there.

Yeaah... I think the torch itself is poorly made, too. (Russian industry here).

What country do you live in, if you don't mind me asking?

Political satire is the best :D

Oh, no - I understood. I just always hate hearing that terrorism is going to be a real issue anywhere, you know? [That and I'm sorry to hear attacks are a regular problem ><.]

You'd probably be a better judge of that than I would.

Ah, Texas [so the US, but...erm. Texas is...a little...special, at least as far as we tend to act as our own country until forced to do otherwise which isn't as often as maybe we should be].

Oh! And I was also kind of wondering...If you could describe the *people* of Russia, how would you do it? I know that sounds a bit strange but...I was wondering, since we always seem to hear about you all's government like it's the sum total of everyone there, you know? Which is just a little hard to believe.

There's a tendency, certainly, and it irritates me fairly. Mostly because I'm against generalizations as such, and because one more person running around with an idea of collective consciousness, collective responsibility, or collective blame shall be the end of me. Societies do not have minds. Societies do not possess personalities. Societies cannot be held responsible.

(not directing this at you, btw, just venting).

But if any generalizations at all are appropriate, I made as many as I could in the thread below.

Oh, no no - it's okay. Tbh, I worded that very, very badly, and I really should have thought it through more than I did. I do apologize for that.

For whatever it's worth, I do agree with you for the most part, particularly since generalizations - even if based on a real thing - can really end up hurting people.
