The urge to write fanfic can also be about finding a fictional world fascinating and wanting to explore it (hello, Pokémon fandom), or about exploring the characters and their interactions beyond what canon tells us, or about imagining alternative scenarios or unseen behind-the-scenes events. I've been in fandom and writing fanfic for more than a decade and in that time I've only dabbled in shipping fic a couple of times.
