I actually kind of don't see the point of fandom without shipping. I mean, I do - but most of the urge to write fanfic is people wanting to see their their fave characters getting romantically involved in a way that will never happen in the canon, or that canon will never focus particularly on. So yeah.

That isn't the reason a fair number of people write fic. Sometimes it's adventure or whump or just exploring the world in a different way.

+1

That's why I write fic myself. Its an outlet for all the ideas about exciting situations I have in mind. Granted, some of those situations may include romance, but not most of them.

The comment you replied to just gave me this bad impression that it was saying anyone who is involved in fandom for reasons other than shipping is abnormal and doesn't understand the TRUE meaning of fandom.

The urge to write fanfic can also be about finding a fictional world fascinating and wanting to explore it (hello, Pokémon fandom), or about exploring the characters and their interactions beyond what canon tells us, or about imagining alternative scenarios or unseen behind-the-scenes events. I've been in fandom and writing fanfic for more than a decade and in that time I've only dabbled in shipping fic a couple of times.

I've never had the urge to write romantic fic. For me, the point is to see the characters in adventures or situations that don't happen in canon, not to make the characters hook up. So sometimes I feel very left out because I don't ship, but I always find there is more to fandom.

There's plenty of people who write gen fic though? Especially fic that derives from canon but doesn't involve romance.

hm. I have some pretty intense ships, but I've never been motivated to write fic about them. What motivates fic for me: love of particular characters, exploring a situation that isn't likely to happen (or happen onscreen) in canon, or feeling like the creator(s) have missed an opportunity.

I don't think that's better or worse than being motivated by shipping, but that's how it is for me.
