But the shop assistant has a friend now to back him up, and the owner was revealed as abusive in front of his customers.

This, plus I always assumed that the old lady never found out that the letters were fake. It's a lie, yes, but it's one that gave her hope, made her happy and isn't harming anyone.

Besides, what about the other people she helped? Giving an old man his childhood memories back? Inspiring a depressed author? Helping two lonely people hook up? I wonder how the OP would twist those into sad endings.

(break-ups and suicide, probably.)

Did you miss the bottom part of the secret where I said I wasn't looking to interpret it in a bad way? I don't remember the other people she helped, and it's probably because I had no big problem with those ones. It was the two that I mentioned that really ruined it for me.

And sorry, I still think it's disturbing to spend the rest of your life happy because of a huge lie. Then you're basically a living subject in someone else's thought experiment until you die, and personal growth and real happiness is hindered.
