That's just dumb. They invented the character and her plots specifically for the movie, of course you can comment on it. Most people recognize that the movies and the books are two different things.

tl;dr You don't have to be a fan of the books to be a fan of the movie.

I don't get why people are even calling it a 'romance', frankly! I went in all ready to be offended at a shoehorned-in 'love triangle' and found that Tauriel was curious about Kili and Kili had a bit of a puppy crush on her 'cause she kills things so good.

THIIIIS.

Yeah this is pretty much what I think of it too. I don't agree with most of the complaints.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
The actual bit with Tauriel and Kili I really liked. But, correct me if I'm wrong, the Legolas involvement was a let addition, and that I really didn't enjoy. Overall I think Legolas was a bit shoehorned in, I expected to be there but he took up way too much screen time.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Legolas wasn't really 'involved' though? I mean, yes he was in the movie, and I can get being annoyed at his simple presence, but as for the so-called 'love-triangle'...all I saw was Thranduil trying to nip something in the bud all "he likes u, don't let him LIKE-like you", while Legolas and Tauriel saw each other pretty exclusively as bros and battle companions.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I felt this way too. I like to think Tauriel comes to care for Kili but not in a romantic way. I'd actually like to see her love him without being in love with him if that makes sense. And it's silly that you'd be getting crap for criticizing this without reading the books. She's a movie OC.

Pretty much this.

She thought he was adorable. He thought she was pretty and fought like a badass. That's no romance. It's a damn crush. People need to chill.

It was a terrible romance. You don't have to be a fan of anything to point that out. You can just say, "It was a terrible romance that added nothing to the story except pointless drama."

It didn't feel forced to me and I thought their scenes were cute. No great romance or anything, which is fine. I haven't read the books either although I've tried. I think of them as two separate things, like I do for most books->movie or books->TV show.

You're allowed to have an opinion on a movie that you watched. Seriously, the films aren't the books and most people acknowledge that.

"I like the idea of an elf/dwarf pairing..."

... what, and Legolas/Gimli isn't good enough for you?

*ducks*

I can never decide if I like them better as a ship or a bromance. I have a lot of pairings like that.

In all seriousness, no LotR pairing will ever top Legolas/Gimli in my eyes.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-29 06:51 am (UTC)(link)
Movies didn't do justice to Gimli at all. He was basically there to look dumb and to be made fun of. So of course they had to make fillers for Hobbit and reused the plotline they've previously wasted. And it's hetero, of course. And the dwarf is now hot and doesn't look like a dwarf at all.
God I hate these movies.

You saw the movie. Therefor you are allowed to have an opinion on the movie. That opinion you have has nothing to do with the books and is solely on the movie.

So you have no problem. Dislike it loudly all you want.

I thought the Tauriel/Legolas thing was the last minute addition.

And damn, I hated that bit.

The whole thing is last-minute. The worst part is, Evangeline Lilly quite firmly said she didn't want to do the role if... either if Tauriel ended up in a romantic subplot or in a love triangle, one of the two, don't remember precisely.

And they didn't. Yay!

And then they called her back and said, "Hey, so, we have some EXTRA scenes for you to shoot..." Suddenly, romantic subplot...

A lot of fans actually agree with you, though it's pretty split.

A "real" Tolkien fan (i.e. bookverse purist) would hate the romance for even being there, Tauriel for being there, even Legolas for being there, and last but not least, Kíli for being too pretty, too brunet, and not bearded enough.

I personally agree with those who think the "romance" is kinda non-existant, but then I went into the movie looking for excuses to ignore it, and I found them. In fact I feel Tauriel feels more about Kíli than he does about her - post-healing comment about "could she have loved me?" notwithstanding (he's damn-well recovering from a state of delerium and he doesn't even think what he saw is the same person as Tauriel).

I actually feel there is more grounds to Legolas' crush on Tauriel than there is to anything between her and Kíli.

But like I said, I went in looking for excuses to ignore it, since I'm a slasher with an established OTP for Kíli.

Who says you're not a real fan? You don't have to read the books to be a Tolkien fan. And yeah, I'm not looking forward to that part of DoS :/

Pfft, real fan, my ass. You like the world? You're a real fan.
