Yeah, I spent about five years living in Montgomery, Alabama, and the hateful stereotypes people assume were not the reality I experienced. Of course, my mom, who lived there for a year or two in the mid-50s when she was four assumes it's still just like it was then.

yeah, the times they are a changin'. My grandmother was born in the south and she IS kinda racist--like never vitriolic or cruel or 'why are those people here', but she can't talk about the subject of race and she would be super upset if I dated a non-white guy--but the newer generations are mostly beyond that. My grandma remembers her daddy guarding the door during race riots and her grandmama telling stories about the yankee army burning and looting and raping their way across the south. It's dumb to pretend that stuff didn't happen, but also dumb for people to assume nothing's changed.
