I'm in the American South and we are snowed in. All day I've been hearing from our Midwest neighbors how dumb we are that we are trapped by a few inches of snow. And why don't we have a plan for this kind of weather.

We don't for the same reason you guys don't have a plan for being hit by a hurricane. This type of weather isn't supposed to happen here. This is a freak storm. We don't have money set aside for ice breaking/clearing equipment that may be used once a decade, if that.

When you make a plan for hurricanes then you have a right to make fun of us. Until then, shut up and send us some hot coco and heavy coats. All we have are jackets and sweaters down here.

Are you me?

The only real difference is that we didn't get any snow in my part of my state - but we've gotten plenty of ice... and I'm sick of people saying we're pussies for, basically, realizing we don't have what we need to safely continue driving in these circumstances that happen maybe once a decade.

(Also, an I safe in assuming your state is off the gulf as well?)

lower East Coast. Where winter is usually in the 50's.

Ahh, didn't realize you guys got hit by that many too. But yeah, we're not to far off from you guys temp. wise, since we're usually mid 50s - 60s.

Atlanta is a mess. They were so unprepared that there were four thousand children that were stuck over night in their schools because there was no way to get them safely home.

Oooh, yeah. A couple of my roommate's coworkers live over there and we've been hearing some horror stories from them. I'm sorry to hear you guys are going through all of that right now. Any sign that it might be over for you guys soon?

nope

Yeah, sorry that a lot of us Midwesterners are being dicks. A few inches of snow isn't a big deal for us because we get it all the time and so we're prepared to deal with it. We have snowplows roaming the streets before the snow even starts falling. The South just doesn't have the infrastructure to deal with it because they usually don't need it. But a lot of us only think about how relatively easy it is for us to deal with without thinking about why it's easy for us. Myopia...

You'd better start thinking about this shit now if you never did before. Climate change isn't going away, it's only going to get worse. Come to think of it, we should probably start looking into hurricane preparedness up here in the Frozen North. Though we do get tornados and flooding already, so we shouldn't be totally SOL if a freak hurricane hits...

I lived in the South for a few years and I get it.

It's the same thing that happens now when I live in the NYC suburbs, the Canadians tell us we're ridiculous, but anything more than a few inches devastates us too.

I hope you're ok and that your family is safe as well.

We'll never make a plan for hurricanes here in Wisconsin because they physically can't happen here, whereas snow and ice clearly can happen in the southeast, just rarely. That said, there's no reason for us to be jerks about it. Just because we are usually better prepared for this stuff with salting trucks and winter driving skills doesn't mean we are incapable of having massive winter pileups:

(Everything is fine until around 1:40 (although a truck is seen driving in the shoulder slightly earlier. All it takes is one bozo driving too fast.)

...I think you're kind of missing the op's point. Which is basically "it's so rare here that there's no real point in keeping that stuff on hand."

Re: Rant thread.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
My intention was only to say that it is silly to compare the south preparing for snow to the north preparing for hurricanes since "the north" does not consist only of New England/the Mid-Atlantic and a lot of us live way too far inland to ever be affected by hurricanes in any real way.

Did you miss the part where I implied our attitude towards this weather is hypocritical because things still get messy even with preparation?

Atlanta got majorly fucked up. Which is pretty much the fault of the governor of Georgia. I'm in NC and it's not been that bad here. As much as I loathe our governor and thought it laughable that he declared a state of emergency over an inch or few of snow, our roads were basically dry and clear when I went out at 1pm, due to all the pre-emptive salting and sanding.

Even here in Maryland some people are landlocked in snow if they don't have the right tires (many don't) or if they don't live in "snow friendly" areas. I can't even imagine what it's like for people who aren't used to it, period.

I think I've said before that Los Angeles is generally prepared for the craziest weather issues that terrifies most of the rest of the country. Shit like wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. - there's a joke around here that you know you're from Los Angeles when you can tell from bed whether an earthquake is worth getting out of bed for...and it usually isn't. (This is actually pretty true - it's almost never worth more than some passing attention).

But people tend to lose their shit when it rains, seeing as it only happens once or twice a year. And if we even saw frost - forget snow, just frost - the whole damn city would probably shut down. :P I can't even imagine trying to live here and deal with a layer of frost thick enough to be barely called snow, letalone that polar vortex thing.

*high-five for a fellow Angeleno*

This is completely true. All my friends were reminiscing about the Northridge quake the other week; I lived a mile from the epicenter. Little quakes are not worth our time. (Although the news stations are sure to find some place with footage of swaying chandeliers, oooh!)

But rain will make everyone crazy. It coats our roads and freeways just enough, and suddenly everything on them is MADNESS.

I remember when it suddenly started raining one day during lunch at my high school - which is an open campus plan, obviously, being So-Cal. Some people literally shrieked, and nearly everyone practically ran for cover...except for the few who started frolicking (I shit you not, frolicking) in the rain, getting covered in mud and dancing like lunatics. This was after a dry spell that was unusually long even for L.A. And they weren't even drunk or high!

My class right after this lunch period had a teacher who was from the east coast, and it cracked him up every time to see how native Angelenos reacted to "*gasp* sky water!" :P

so glad we're further south than Atlanta.
