Rant thread.

Give me all you've got.

I'm in the American South and we are snowed in. All day I've been hearing from our Midwest neighbors how dumb we are that we are trapped by a few inches of snow. And why don't we have a plan for this kind of weather.

We don't for the same reason you guys don't have a plan for being hit by a hurricane. This type of weather isn't supposed to happen here. This is a freak storm. We don't have money set aside for ice breaking/clearing equipment that may be used once a decade, if that.

When you make a plan for hurricanes then you have a right to make fun of us. Until then, shut up and send us some hot coco and heavy coats. All we have are jackets and sweaters down here.

Re: Rant thread.

Are you me?

The only real difference is that we didn't get any snow in my part of my state - but we've gotten plenty of ice... and I'm sick of people saying we're pussies for, basically, realizing we don't have what we need to safely continue driving in these circumstances that happen maybe once a decade.

(Also, an I safe in assuming your state is off the gulf as well?)

Yeah, sorry that a lot of us Midwesterners are being dicks. A few inches of snow isn't a big deal for us because we get it all the time and so we're prepared to deal with it. We have snowplows roaming the streets before the snow even starts falling. The South just doesn't have the infrastructure to deal with it because they usually don't need it. But a lot of us only think about how relatively easy it is for us to deal with without thinking about why it's easy for us. Myopia...

Re: Rant thread.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
You'd better start thinking about this shit now if you never did before. Climate change isn't going away, it's only going to get worse. Come to think of it, we should probably start looking into hurricane preparedness up here in the Frozen North. Though we do get tornados and flooding already, so we shouldn't be totally SOL if a freak hurricane hits...

I lived in the South for a few years and I get it.

It's the same thing that happens now when I live in the NYC suburbs, the Canadians tell us we're ridiculous, but anything more than a few inches devastates us too.

I hope you're ok and that your family is safe as well.

Re: Rant thread.

We'll never make a plan for hurricanes here in Wisconsin because they physically can't happen here, whereas snow and ice clearly can happen in the southeast, just rarely. That said, there's no reason for us to be jerks about it. Just because we are usually better prepared for this stuff with salting trucks and winter driving skills doesn't mean we are incapable of having massive winter pileups:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohBIM1CHzWY

(Everything is fine until around 1:40 (although a truck is seen driving in the shoulder slightly earlier. All it takes is one bozo driving too fast.)

Atlanta got majorly fucked up. Which is pretty much the fault of the governor of Georgia. I'm in NC and it's not been that bad here. As much as I loathe our governor and thought it laughable that he declared a state of emergency over an inch or few of snow, our roads were basically dry and clear when I went out at 1pm, due to all the pre-emptive salting and sanding.

Even here in Maryland some people are landlocked in snow if they don't have the right tires (many don't) or if they don't live in "snow friendly" areas. I can't even imagine what it's like for people who aren't used to it, period.

I think I've said before that Los Angeles is generally prepared for the craziest weather issues that terrifies most of the rest of the country. Shit like wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. - there's a joke around here that you know you're from Los Angeles when you can tell from bed whether an earthquake is worth getting out of bed for...and it usually isn't. (This is actually pretty true - it's almost never worth more than some passing attention).

But people tend to lose their shit when it rains, seeing as it only happens once or twice a year. And if we even saw frost - forget snow, just frost - the whole damn city would probably shut down. :P I can't even imagine trying to live here and deal with a layer of frost thick enough to be barely called snow, letalone that polar vortex thing.

I’m very angry and irritated that a guy I thought was a friend would spend so much time trying to convince me to sleep over after he repeatedly tried to make out with me. Thought we were friends. Happily committed guys do not canoodle with known lesbians. They do not try to kiss the lesbian.... while in a relationship with a girl and after I’ve explained how uninterested I am in dick AND tries to pull the “what she doesn’t know can’t hurt” card. You’re trying to kiss me. You’re trying to grope me. I’m not interested. NO.
Took a taxi home, had a couple of gay (male) friends field him for me.
I hope my gay buddies hook up, even with my accidental cock blocking of them while using them as a gay escort to taxi ( His guy he was picking up helped me out too so we know that’s a good guy).

Very irked by it, but the more he tried to convince me to stay the more certain I was to not crash the night. Even with potential gay man barriers. Uninterested guys don’t care that much, especially after I explain why.

I have a class I need to teach in 4 minutes. They're doing plays based on sayings of Prophet Muhammad, but half of them are, er, somewhat challenged and I think I'm going to have to end up making it a class thing instead of dividing them into groups so they all do separate plays. I honestly believe, though, that this wouldn't happen if some of them would just listen to me and pay attention. I guess it's kind of my fault for not being an engaging enough teacher - but it's good enough for the half of them so idk. It's only my second day and I want to give up ;_;

But I won't, of course. Some of them are really hardworking and are very excited about it, I'd go on, for their sakes. But still.

Re: Rant thread.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, it's not uncommon for students to not listen, particularly if they know/suspect a teacher is new.

AGGGH SO CLOSE TO JUST GETTING A KNIFE AND PAIR OF PLIERS

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
The administrator of my company screwed up my paperwork so I missed the deadline to qualify for health insurance this year. I've put in an appeal but the earliest I'll have coverage is in two weeks.

Perfect time for a wisdom tooth my previous dentist called harmless and recommended we didn't remove to somehow develop pericoronitis.

I had to pay out of pocket to get a dentist to examine and x-ray me only to refer me to another dentist who today charged me more for the same examination and another x-ray who then referred me to an oral surgeon who wants to charge me for another examination and a third x-ray (even though he's been provided both previous x-rays) before discussing whether or not he'd be able to schedule me in for surgery.

Both dentist one and two did not prescribe me antibiotics for the infection that has now spread to a tonsil and lymph node because "You'll have it out tomorrow and [other doctor] will write you a prescription".

My boss is giving me shit about taking tomorrow off for the hopeful emergency dental surgery I was told I needed ASAP three days ago. I even found someone to cover my shift before he even knew that it was necessary and I have literally missed one other day of work in nearly a year - the day I had a life-threatening allergic reaction.

I'm just in pain, frustrated, soon to have depleted my emergency savings, CAN TASTE THE INFECTION IN MY MOUTH, and have no idea how these dentists expect me to keep paying them if they make me miss entire days of work waiting in their office so they can tell me exactly what the guy who referred me to them said.

Also paperwork took twice as long as the nurse kept misspelling my name in new and creative ways even though I was still wearing my nametag from work and verbally spelled it out every time I gave it to her. Weirdly she is the only person to never mispronounce it.

At least I'm too mad to obsess over the possibility of dry socket.

My cousin is driving me crazy and I blame Edward Snowden for it. Ever since it was revealed from one of his leaks that the US and UK governments are collecting information from twitter and youtube accounts, he has been ranting how awful it is to have those governments spying on the everyone. And how unfair it is. To which I say, "Yes, spying on the most open to the public, anyone can see what you are doing and you want people to follow you and see what you are doing sites." Hacking into people's private e-mail accounts, I can see. But youtube and twitter? Come on. Anyone can gather information about you with those. Not just the government. Of course he retorts, "But they are gather vasts amounts and such incredible rate!" Thing is, anyone can do this too but it will take them a little while longer.

Fuck Snowden for making my already annoying, paranoid cousin even more annoying and paranoid.

Re: Rant thread.

(Anonymous) 2014-01-30 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I can guarantee that governments are not the only ones gathering mass amounts of data from Twitter and other such sites.

I have a good friend who has a lot of really bad problems currently. They're worse than any I have. But when I listen to her vent about them, I get so worried and feel so bad that I can't help her that I've had panic attacks over it. I don't want to hear her talk about her problems anymore, I don't want to have any more panic attacks. But she doesn't have anyone else to talk to, and I'm too afraid it would make me selfish if I tell her the truth.

I'm really getting fucking tired of my ex-friend going around and reconciling with people I hate in order to 1) piss me off and 2) make herself look good. She's basically burned a lot of bridges and is good at pretending she's a sweet person to get her way, when really she's a selfish bitch. I just wish people would see what a manipulative cunt she is.

As the only native speaker in my group of friends, I am constantly asked to edit people's shit for uni. This is not a problem for me - I'm a nice guy, and generally I'm cool with people just spotting me a cup of coffee in return.

Recently, I edited ENORMOUS CHUNKS of a friend's diploma thesis and didn't even get a verbal "thanks". And I didn't think much of it because everyone's stressed as hell when they're turning in their thesis.

But another friend gave her formatting help and I just heard that she got an enormous bouquet of flowers, chocolate, and a bottle of bubbly. And now I'm simultaneously stewing in some sort of jealous haze (damnit, why does SHE get the VIP thanks treatment and I didn't even merit a quick text?) and feeling super petty for feeling jealous and feeling mad abut their ability to MAKE me feel this ridiculous.

TL.DR: I'm super jealous that people I've helped only thanked other people who helped them and not me and feeling this way pisses me off.
