I have seen LOTS of people complain about too much Moriarty in BBC Sherlock (and I agree)and the way he keeps being resurrected in the Rathbone films.

Most of the Irene discussions seem to be about whether her characterisation is consistent with canon.

IOW, not sure where OP is coming from?

I believe you've hit the nail on the head. Moriarty's overrepresented in his outrageous villainy when he was originally a mild-mannered professor who showed up once and died. It's just because he was meant to kill Holmes that he ever became so big. And Irene Adler's overrepresented as the love interest and villain just because she outsmarted Sherlock Holmes, so she has to be made weaker than him and not as trustworthy EVEN THOUGH THE ENTIRE RESOLUTION OF BOHEMIA HAPPENED BECAUSE SHE WAS TRUSTWORTHY!

It really surprises me at how many people who read Bohemia STILL take the King's "she's blackmailing me and she's so ruthless and she's out to get me!" claim at face value even though the entire twist at the end was that he was actually full of shit.

Yeah. He says she is, and the proof is...? It's worth noting that there's no note to this effect or anything. But the King admits to having men break into her house and waylay her luggage when she travels to try and find the picture. It's the KING who's the real bastard of the story...

Which really comes out in the Granada version.

Love that exchange -- "What a Queen she would have made! Too bad she was not at my level!"

And Sherlock replies, "Yes, she was indeed at a very different level than your majesty." Such a delicious burn.

Yeah, I love that line. And he says it with enough scorn in his voice that even the King - who is far from the sharpest knife in the drawer - realizes he has just been insulted.

Moriarty was later retconned by ACD to fill in some background to "the Napoleon of crime" comment - so he features heavily in VALL as well, but I found him being in so many of the eps of BBC in person tiresome, and the actual performance much too pantomime, sorry Andrew Scott.

As for Moftiss: "when we were twelve we decided he must have fancied her in order to find her exceptional" - ARGH. Yeah, because Holmes couldn't possibly have respected her intellect and been surprised out of his prejudice and complacency about women. Must be about sex. Blech.

Actually he was the Napoleon of Crime even in FINA, ACD just retconned Watson not knowing about him.
