Maybe this is a good opportunity to say that I have no idea what people are talking about when they complain that Tolkien is long-winded and spends too much time describing the scenery. I finally read the Lord of the Rings trilogy last year and I kept checking to make sure I didn't get an abridged edition.

High-five, brother/sister/whoever you are. My reaction was the same.

Man I read the trilogy in fourth grade and had no problems. It was actually nice to things described so beautifully.

I think he goes overboard, but I also count those books as scenery porn the same way I find Redwall books full of food porn and gorn at times too. Tolkien goes on and on, but it still makes me wish I had decent coloring and scene skills to put to paper the good visual.

MAn the food-porn in Redwall is the best. I always ended like "I NEED SOME GRILLED FISH NOW" or "IDK WHAT MEADOWCREAM IS BUT GIMME SOME STAT". very hungry.

Yes, this. I knew nothing of this opinion back when I read him for the first time, had zero problems and was mightily nonplussed to learn what people think about his writing. Like, have you even read Balzac? Or Tolstoy? Do you know what a really long-winded description sounds like?
