I have to say I am a huge fan of "The Man in the Moon Stayed Up Too Late" in FotR, so I might read Tolkien for the poetry, if I felt in the mood to read that poem.

Yeah, and I like Van Gogh for the visuals.

Why is this a secret? Which FUCKING IDIOT told you Melville is a bad writer?

Maybe this is a good opportunity to say that I have no idea what people are talking about when they complain that Tolkien is long-winded and spends too much time describing the scenery. I finally read the Lord of the Rings trilogy last year and I kept checking to make sure I didn't get an abridged edition.

Cool Secret.

I mean, I don't think that all those writers are good at prose, but it's not like Lovecraft's prose is uninteresting. But more importantly, why do I give a shit about why you're reading cool awesome interesting books? Read them for whatever reason! And then come talk about them with me! Seriously how awesome is Gormenghast!

Most of these I get but anyone who reads Lovecraft for the prose is out of their minds -- he's basically aping Poe and doing a bad job of it.

Nothing to add but WOW somebody is still reading C. L. Moore! She definitely deserves it. I revisited "No Woman Born" a while back and was blown away all over again by how brilliant it is.

Isn't Gormenghast known for it's descriptive language? I've only read the first one and disliked it, the prose was the only part I enjoyed...

Why is this a secret? All those writers have fascinating, distinctive things going on with their styles. All of them have a certain musicality to them at their best. All of them have written passages so gorgeous I've just had to set the book down and just take deep breaths and savor it again and again.
