Although my fandom interests seem to differ a bit from yours (I have no interest in fandom Draco - no offense, to each their own!), I do admit I think the HP fandom affected how I saw canon, although I wouldn't even say it ruined anything for me as I always tried to keep the two very separate. But still, I think the reason Harry's kids names were so grating to me was that I'd read a million (horrible) "next generation" fics with the exact same concept, so it was this huge badfic cliche in a book I'd otherwise loved. I was also a big Marauder person, and holy heck, the Marauders JKR ended up writing and the Marauders I read/wrote fanfic about? Two different groups of people.

I guess that's what happens when there's a three year summer (then a two year gap between the fifth and sixth/sixth and seventh books), everyone invents their own canon and forgets the actual canon.

No offense taken! Different strokes, and all.

And that three-year gap is exactly when I got into HP fanfiction. There was so much being written, all different plots and backgrounds and theories. Deathly Hallows was so different from how I thought it was going to end that I don't think I've reread it at all.

my problem was that I liked some of the fic SO MUCH more than the books. Writing quality, character building, worldbuilding, plotting...by the time the later books came out I'd already read a dozen fics that imo did it better. (I think JKR seriously shot herself in the foot by making them 3rd person limited to Harry's perspective)
