I dunno how "true" the Yumikuri fans are who ship it alongside Eren/Levi, but one thing that generally annoys me about AO3 and frustrates me about SNK fandom in particular is that people tag their fics with multiple ships, even if the focus is Eren/Levi and the other ships barely get a mention.

I hate looking for say, Armin/Jean and mostly finding Eren/Levi where A/J is a side ship. Yumikuri has it even worse because it's a side ship for like EVERY SNK ship fic.

I guess other than popularity, people probably tag things this way because some people can't stand ship XY even if it is only mentioned in one sentence, but overall, I still wish that people only tagged their fics with ships and characters that the story actually focuses on. I feel like this would alleviate at least a bit of fandom frustration.

Oh my god, as a fellow Jean/Armin shipper, I feel your pain.

And I totally agree with you. I was actually talking to a friend about this, and she said she wants every pairing tagged because she doesn't want to stumble across her notp, but the thing is that she always ships the fandom juggernaut pairings.

Honestly though, while I don't really care about Eren/Levi, I wouldn't really mind if it was a background pairing for a Jean/Armin fic. It would just be so much easier for me if I didn't have to go through a bunch of Eren/Levi fics to find the small handful of Jean/Armin fics where it actually focuses on them and not Eren/Levi.

Yeah, loving A/J can be frustrating sometimes. I console myself with the fact that it's still not a rare pair or a plain unpopular ship, plus Japanese fandom for it is pretty big and active. Also, they do have the benefit of interacting fairly often in canon, which is always nice when you ship something that will never happen. Basically, I try not to complain too much since there is still plenty to be happy about - though occasionally I can't help it.

Hahaha, must be nice to be your friend. Then again, when I do happen to ship a fandom juggernaut, there's usually so much that I don't even know where to start with searching good fic.

Personally, I do sometimes cringe at having NOTPs in the background, but I am more than willing to bear it as long as the main ship is something I love and written at least halfway decently.

Eren/Levi always feels a bit "off" to me (not a believer in this ship) but, yeah, if they're the background ship for A/J I'm honestly not too bothered, even if I don't see why it is so often paired with A/J? Is Eremin that much of a threat?
Well, recently I've seen JeanMarco more often get the dubious honor of being Eren/Levi's side dish, so maybe things are changing a bit.

I don't ship A/J, but I can definitely sympathize with your pain. The tagging is just awful sometimes.

Yeah, while I definitely think that it at least partially happens out of consideration for people who can't bear their NOTP even mentioned in one sentence, it's still kind of like being "tricked" while searching for your favorite ship and can lead to some big disappointments.

That's the one thing in which the rare pairs and unpopular ships have it better - they rarely get side ship status, so when they're tagged it's more often the "real deal".

I've shipped rare pairs, and sometimes the disappointment that it's just another popular pairing fic is worse, since you got your hopes up...

When I look for Shingeki no Kyojin fic on ao3, I usually filter out the Levi/Eren tag. It makes looking for fic for other pairings a lot easier.

Dumb question, but how do you filter out tags on AO3? I know how to narrow things down and search by hits, kudos, etc. but not how to calibrate the search bar into skipping undesired stuff.

Yes. This is my major problem.

I usually subtract '-eren/levi' from my searches just assuming that if they're listed they're the main focus. I'm not wrong.

i wish there were different tags for like the main pairing and background pairings. (though i have a hard time swallowing eren/levi as a background ship too)
