No, this is my reaction to nearly any documentary about the US - disbelief and shock about their relationship with firearms. Aren't there several guns per man, woman and child there?

In my country, even the purchase of fireworks is forbidden except by public license. I can't get over the gun thing either.

Neither can some of us Americans. It's out of control and horrifying. I hate it.

How hard is it to get a public license for fireworks in your country? What country is it?

Northern Ireland. We're still going through last dregs of bombings here (I was put out of my house last month while the men in white suits did their stuff with a robot). Hence the tight control of any explosives, even fireworks.

Although it remains great to visit Northern Ireland as a tourist. Visitors don't go anywhere near where the trouble is. I can't emphasise enough how pretty it is here. I love showing my family and friends around. Come to Northern Ireland!

Also home of the BEST locations in the Game of Thrones.

- Winterfell, Ned Stark's castle (Co Antrim, farmland near Larne)
- inside Winterfell (Co Down, Castle Ward, a National Trust property open to the public)
- Forest around The Wall (Co Down, Mourne Mountains, Tollymore Forest, a public park)
- Joisting at Lannister Camp (Co Antrim, Shane's Castle, a private estate only open on special occasions)
- Burning of the old gods on the beach (Co Londonderry, Mussenden Temple, public beach)
- (Co Antrim, the Dark Hedges, a country road you can drive down)

And my favourite, which I visited again myself last summer:
- Harbour at the Iron Isles (Co Antrim, Ballintoy Harbour). There's a cute little cafe in one of the limestone buildings where you can have a nice lunch. Although, ha, they've put up this sign of Theon Grayjoy there now, that wasn't there at the time.

more information about GoT locations and our beautiful scenery here

[This has been a public information broadcast by the NI Tourist Board, who always love to kick off with mentions of bombs at the start of their promotions.]

Oh, I see. I wasn't aware of the bombings there. I'm pretty ignorant about it. Will have to read up on it. I would love to visit Northern Ireland! It looks so beautiful. Omg, so envious that you live there.

If you want to visit Northern Ireland, and you like epic scenery, try the Giant's Causeway.

The Giant's Causeway would be my first tourist stop. I've been fascinated/awed by it ever since I first heard about it.

The Giants Causeway has a new vistor's centre these days and is a very efficient operation, including guides at the causeway to ensure you don't fall into the sea and get washed out to Scotland as you clamber on the rocks.

I recommend going on a dry day, even if you don't intend to take an impromptu dip. August/early Sept is the best time to avoid that famous Irish rain.

When I went there last it was baking hot and with the crazy rock formations, almost like another planet.

Lol, knowing my luck I would be washed away. Thank you so much for the info.

I've been there as a tourist and now would like to study and'or work there. We were shown some staff, like a wall with wire though, so I g ot a feeling it's pretty recent.

But

people in Northern Ireland can legally own rifles, shotguns, and handguns?

Shotguns, yes. But it's hard to commit crimes with a shotgun unless you saw off the end because of the problems concealment, and sawn off shotguns are strictly illegal.

Rifles - again, not so good for committing crimes, and bulky. And we're talking air rifles instead of assault rifles.

Handguns - I'm pretty sure these are illegal in all forms except for official use. Someone I heard about was hiding only part of a gun, not even a full gun, and he lost his job and was thrown in jail and it was a huge thing.

Also, types of ammo are restricted. Buckshot is what most farmers use. I've never known a farmer use anything else, and they're the only people I know with legal guns here outside the security forces.

I literally have multiple relatives who own handguns for personal protection.

IIRC if you're carrying for that you need a special type of licence signed off by the police with decent reasons, but you can certainly get them for target shooting and such without an incredible amount of legal difficulty.
