when was the last time you missed the point of something...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
So I was watching a documentary series about the best trauma ER departments in the world last night and they had an episode about a hospital in the Bronx.
Instead of being impressed about the trauma procedure they used I completely missed the point of the documentary by instead being very very glad my country has much stricter gun control then the us.

I was reading a book where ordinary people kept doing magic/seeing miracles/being transferred to other worlds, and the only thing I could think of throughout the whole narrative was how much I'd like to break a brick against the author's head so that she'd understand that the actual reality never conforms to people's desires and dreams.

Like, there was this one girl in the story who had a friend who apparently had cancer; the friend once gave the girl a pepper in a pot; and at some point the pepper started wilting. Simultaneously, the guy was hospitalized. The girl went "loL I know that sympathetic magic is rubbish bUT I'LL TRY", and she tried, and iT WORKED. I was SO ANGRY at the author. ...Talk about missing the point.

Eeeughhh, kinda sounds like Paul Cuelho's book The Alchemist. I hated it; it was full of that smarmy "Believe in yourself & the universe will conspire to grant your wishes!" crap.

Which is why I hate Paulo Coelho [AFAIR, you got the guy's name all wrong]. Plus, he can't write for shit.

It is sad that I kind of like the writer in question. She's fine when she writes about her fantasy worlds. But this message makes me nope out of a story faster than anything else.

Yeahhhh, that kind of message is one thing that just makes me go "NOPE".

Just because it's so... condescending. Like wow maybe I should believe harder and all my problems will go away! Ha.

New Ager's answer to how to be a witless fundie without the Bible-thumping, tbh. Both are equally abhorrent.

No, this is my reaction to nearly any documentary about the US - disbelief and shock about their relationship with firearms. Aren't there several guns per man, woman and child there?

In my country, even the purchase of fireworks is forbidden except by public license. I can't get over the gun thing either.

Neither can some of us Americans. It's out of control and horrifying. I hate it.

How hard is it to get a public license for fireworks in your country? What country is it?

Northern Ireland. We're still going through last dregs of bombings here (I was put out of my house last month while the men in white suits did their stuff with a robot). Hence the tight control of any explosives, even fireworks.

Although it remains great to visit Northern Ireland as a tourist. Visitors don't go anywhere near where the trouble is. I can't emphasise enough how pretty it is here. I love showing my family and friends around. Come to Northern Ireland!

Also home of the BEST locations in the Game of Thrones.

- Winterfell, Ned Stark's castle (Co Antrim, farmland near Larne)
- inside Winterfell (Co Down, Castle Ward, a National Trust property open to the public)
- Forest around The Wall (Co Down, Mourne Mountains, Tollymore Forest, a public park)
- Joisting at Lannister Camp (Co Antrim, Shane's Castle, a private estate only open on special occasions)
- Burning of the old gods on the beach (Co Londonderry, Mussenden Temple, public beach)
- (Co Antrim, the Dark Hedges, a country road you can drive down)

And my favourite, which I visited again myself last summer:
- Harbour at the Iron Isles (Co Antrim, Ballintoy Harbour). There's a cute little cafe in one of the limestone buildings where you can have a nice lunch. Although, ha, they've put up this sign of Theon Grayjoy there now, that wasn't there at the time.

more information about GoT locations and our beautiful scenery here

[This has been a public information broadcast by the NI Tourist Board, who always love to kick off with mentions of bombs at the start of their promotions.]

Oh, I see. I wasn't aware of the bombings there. I'm pretty ignorant about it. Will have to read up on it. I would love to visit Northern Ireland! It looks so beautiful. Omg, so envious that you live there.

I've been there as a tourist and now would like to study and'or work there. We were shown some staff, like a wall with wire though, so I g ot a feeling it's pretty recent.

But

people in Northern Ireland can legally own rifles, shotguns, and handguns?

Shotguns, yes. But it's hard to commit crimes with a shotgun unless you saw off the end because of the problems concealment, and sawn off shotguns are strictly illegal.

Rifles - again, not so good for committing crimes, and bulky. And we're talking air rifles instead of assault rifles.

Handguns - I'm pretty sure these are illegal in all forms except for official use. Someone I heard about was hiding only part of a gun, not even a full gun, and he lost his job and was thrown in jail and it was a huge thing.

Also, types of ammo are restricted. Buckshot is what most farmers use. I've never known a farmer use anything else, and they're the only people I know with legal guns here outside the security forces.

I literally have multiple relatives who own handguns for personal protection.

IIRC if you're carrying for that you need a special type of licence signed off by the police with decent reasons, but you can certainly get them for target shooting and such without an incredible amount of legal difficulty.

I'm just dropping in to say please stop rubbing it in. Talk about it amongst your own country's folk, but how does nobody understand how insensitive it is to sit there and type about your gratitude from a position of safety and comfort in a forum where so many Americans who are terrified of gun violence in their daily lives can read it. It's salt in a wound. Put a content warning, at the least.

I'm just dropping in to say you're not serious, are you? Do you also object to people saying how glad they are they're not somewhere hit by a natural disaster, or in a war zone?

So we probably should stop talking about how fucking bad the situation is for LGBT people in Russia because compared to there, we're actually really well off with our rights?

I'm an American. And I don't find it insensitive to discuss gun violence country-to-country or suffer from any sense of envy for the other (unnamed) country's stricter gun control laws. Also? I'm not terrified by discussions of gun violence.

Speak for yourself.

YOU are a sensitive snowflake and YOU would like a stranger on the internet to warn for non-specific discussions tangential to gun violence, thereby conforming to YOUR nebulous standards.

Yeah, no.

Get over yourself.

Just to say thank you. I was worried for a second there with the above anon you were replying to.

I mean, I'm from a country where we had civil war and terrorism for decades, but if someone wrote a post saying 'so glad I don't live where there's civil war or terrorism, it looks appalling and shocking' I'd just think they were very sensible.

I'm the OP and I stand by my point. You and ayrt are insensitive. I can't believe this is so hard. I wouldn't talk about your country's problems in front of you.

Re: when was the last time you missed the point of something...

I think there's a huge difference between saying you like your laws better regarding X specific point, here gun control, and saying so glad I don't live in your crappy hellhole of a country. The first strikes me as a conversational gambit regarding how a country is organized/run. The second is just rude and insensitive (but possibly sensible).

But then, I don't mind discussing How Things Work. Gun violence in the U.S. is a tangled thing that wouldn't necessarily be solved by stricter gun control laws, given how that's worked out in some of our larger cities. And in our smallest towns that are ages away from anything... including help.

I've been reading comparative gun control articles lately and it's definitely interesting to see that in some countries a lack of guns hasn't slowed anyone down. They've just switched to older, more common weapons - like knives/cleavers/etc. In another country, there was literally one gun for every three people but gun violence was practically nonexistent.

The articles were frustrating though because the authors sucked at the very basic skills of semi-objective observation, critical analysis, and comparing/contrasting. They were dudes talking about their holidays. I wish I knew what grants they had so I could try to steal them.

I remember reading this one book in highschool called Anna's Story which about a girl who died from a drug overdose. It was supposed to be a warning to teenagers that even just 'casual' or 'recreational' drug use can lead to death, because Anna only took one tablet and was dead 48 hours later.

I didn't get that message. Rather, I learned that I should never take drugs by myself or without some good friends because goddamn Anna could still be alive today if her friends weren't CRIMINALLY NEGLIGENT. They had their testimonies in the book and they claimed that they didn't get help when Anna started deteriorating because they were afraid of getting in trouble. ARE YOU SHITTING ME. Your friend is pale, nearly unresponsive, vomiting and unable to stand. GET HER TO A FUCKING HOSPITAL!

But they didn't, she died, and I was seething at the fact that those fucking useless bints weren't arrested for manslaughter or something.
