How. Just. How the fuck. Are you supposed to use this? My 66 year old mother just got a new computer, and it was bad enough when I understood the OS. Now I can't find things. I can't close things. I can't switch between tabs or go back a page in a browser or open links in email or anything. What the fuck, Microsoft?

I have windows 8 and I can switch between tabs, go back a page and open links in emails. maybe something else is wrong

I have Windows 8 and I'm not having any of those problems. :\a

I've been using Windows 8 for months and haven't had a problem using browsers. As for closing the "apps" you can either use Alt+F4 or hold the mouse button at the top of the screen where it turns into a hand. Hold down the mouse button and drag the app down to the bottom of the screen. That closes it out.

Oh sweet, thank you. I have to teach her how to use the thing, and I can't even figure it out. I've still got Windows 7 on my desktop and laptop (which I am on now).

Maybe you can give this a shot: How To Make Win 8 Look Like Win 7. There's also Classic Shell, and many other programs to make 8 behave like 7 because a lot of people are frustrated with 8. If you can get to Google, get as many as possible and godspeed.

Yeahhhh... it's really intended for tablets, tbh. (I'm honestly regretting my purchase, and I wish I'd got an Apple!)

As to how you use it - there should be a little windows icon down the bottom (the square window pane thing), and you should be able to click on that to get back to the main screen with all the apps and stuff. There should also be a "Desktop" app which brings you to a screen that looks like the Windows 7 desktop with all the folders and stuff on it.

The tile icon was introduced in Windows 8.1, because tons of people were pissed about it. So I would download Windows 8.1 if I were you.

For closing tabs if you have a tablet, you should be able to swipe horizontally across the screen to switch apps.

Not sure about the links thing, that's weird.

Yep, this is the main problem. They made this great tablet OS and then they just PUT IT ON A LAPTOP WITHOUT CHANGING *ANYTHING*.

I even had one app-related thing I was doing tell me to "swipe" something.

I mean I get that some laptops have touchscreens now but they don't all have them. Sheesh. a little basic editing/reformatting maybe...?

Yeah. Assuming that everyone has tablets is a REALLY dumb decision that could have taken like... what, 5 seconds of research?

I'm just picturing this room full of douchebag IT guys & marketers.

Also, making such a significant change to the navigation was also a really dumb idea, since it's what works and what people are familiar with. You can't expect people to just instantly switch overnight.

(I just have a lot of feelings about Microsoft okay.)

Classic Shell.

Nearly everyone I know who has Windows 8 and uses their computer regularly uses Classic Shell or some other variant to make Windows 8 look and feel like Windows 7.

You have to fiddle around with a lot of the Classic Shell settings (always make sure to see all settings, advanced settings, etc), as well as some of Windows' own settings. And if you have any problems with Windows 8 and Google for a way to fix it, go to the Microsoft threads but skip the official answers - those always just say things like "we're sorry, you can't remove that feature", but someone else on the thread will usually have a way out of it.

That said, you'll have to do a bit more digging if you have 8.1 instead of 8 - Microsoft hasn't really fixed any of the stuff they said they would, and unfortunately some of the deeper-lying stuff in the coding means the old fixes to 8's bullshit are a little harder to apply in 8.1. :(

Though if your computer is new, see if you can just get a pirated Windows 7 instead. You won't lose much.

Fuck Win 8.

I more or less understand how to use it now (took me a while though) but it has so many major limitations in the things I specifically want to do.

I'm so glad my cousin got a new computer with Windows 8 for Christmas, otherwise I would have bought this shit when I got myself a new one.

I cannot deal with that stupid tablet OS and refuse to use it. I'm glad other people found a way to use a classic shell, but holy shit, Microsoft, you're fucking PC OS should be usuable on a PC from the get-go and not require any tweaking.

Fuck Windows 8. Seriously, just fuck it.
