I've been using Windows 8 for months and haven't had a problem using browsers. As for closing the "apps" you can either use Alt+F4 or hold the mouse button at the top of the screen where it turns into a hand. Hold down the mouse button and drag the app down to the bottom of the screen. That closes it out.

Oh sweet, thank you. I have to teach her how to use the thing, and I can't even figure it out. I've still got Windows 7 on my desktop and laptop (which I am on now).
