The plot devices and kinks should be tagged as long as they don't spoil the story, but I think the problem is when readers get excited when they're fave is tagged in a story, but are let down when it's either just a mention or outright bashing.

Tagging outright bashing in fics, yes that would be horrible. Like the Tumblr approach of tagging hate.

But I don't mind even background mentions of pairings or characters I love. I'm often into quite minor characters and even a tiny mention gets me all excited and often helps me see them in a new light.

Usually it's clear from the summary that they're not the main focus. I don't think I've been disappointed yet, and I've read thousands of fics on AO3.

Actually... I have. I've read easily over ten thousand fics there. Since 2009, probably 10 fics a day. That's about 18,000 fics. That's scary.

Thankfully, I'm in relatively small fandoms in fic-searching terms, The only exceptions are two fandoms where there are specialised sites for their fic, and for when I want to read an cool as fuck crossover.

Crossovers - and there's another focus for hate.

Some of my favourite fics ever have been crossovers/AUs. Even if I hated the fandoms before I read the fic, I often love them crossed over because it highlights interesting connections.

I remember one fic I wrote a long time ago, and I got comments saying that because I actually stayed in-world and in-character they weren't annoyed, like with other fics. It was my first fic for that fandom, which is why I did it. It's not necessarily what I want to read that all the time in a fic myself. It seems kind of bland.

I think crossovers have the potential to explore character dynamics and similarities in settings, that's why I like to observe the Dreamwidth RP scene occasionaly.
