But I don't mind even background mentions of pairings or characters I love. I'm often into quite minor characters and even a tiny mention gets me all excited and often helps me see them in a new light.
Usually it's clear from the summary that they're not the main focus. I don't think I've been disappointed yet, and I've read thousands of fics on AO3.
Actually... I have. I've read easily over ten thousand fics there. Since 2009, probably 10 fics a day. That's about 18,000 fics. That's scary.

Some of my favourite fics ever have been crossovers/AUs. Even if I hated the fandoms before I read the fic, I often love them crossed over because it highlights interesting connections.
I remember one fic I wrote a long time ago, and I got comments saying that because I actually stayed in-world and in-character they weren't annoyed, like with other fics. It was my first fic for that fandom, which is why I did it. It's not necessarily what I want to read that all the time in a fic myself. It seems kind of bland.
