Er, in the cases of Cinderella and Snow White at least, their "families" abused and/or tried to kill them. If I was them, I would want to get the hell out, too. And also (this should go without saying, but) women were generally expected to get married at young ages in the past.

I agree that evil Hans was magnificent, even though I was annoyed they made the decision to make him evil (I don't think this is the kind of film that needed a villain). I am a bit put off that they didn't have him go off into an evil reprise of "Love is an Open Door" though.

That would have been FABULOUS. A villanous, comedy reprise. It would probably have spoiled the pacing of the movie, but now I'm imagining it, I want it.

Yeah, I thought it wasn't an entirely fair example as I said it. And Belle has her father visit her regularly after marriage. But there's still the old-fashioned unspoken expectation that a bride will move away and leave her home.

Ariel. That's a better example.
