Re: Examples of subtle ways to show closeness in live action TV and movies

If you have two characters eating, and they eat food from the other one's plate without asking, and without the other character being at all surprised or bothered by it, that tends to indicate some level of closeness. Even more so if they load up their own plates with each other's favorites specifically because they know they'll be stealing from each other.

Also, I remember seeing a reverse of this at the beginning of a movie (can't remember which) to indicate how distant two characters were: the scene was in a restaurant, and the first several shots were of couples' feet all entwined together, with the last shot being of a couple whose feet were firmly planted on the ground well away from each other. So maybe a reverse of that, i.e. lots of shots of people whose hands and feet are well away from each other, except for your close couple whose hands and/or feet are closely entwined.

And this only works for action movies, but if you're going to fight with someone back to back, then you two really have to know each other for that to work (i.e. have some kind of hidden signal between you two to know when to duck, when to lean a certain direction, etc), so while it does get mis-used a lot, I still see back-to-back fighting as a really good indication of closeness.

The movie was Crazy Stupid Love! (My favourite romantic comedy of all time.)
