Examples of subtle ways to show closeness in live action TV and movies

(Anonymous) 2014-02-02 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm working on an essay about how to convey chemistry and friendship or family in visual live action mediums like TV and film without explicitly or dramatically tell it to the audience, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me examples (don't have to be specific ones, just "I know I've seen this thing where..." is fine) of little visual things you guys may have noticed or know that writers/directors/actors employ in order to convey the closeness between two characters. I mean "they have chemistry" or "they work well together" is a thing that people understand, but I'm trying to describe some of the actual ways this comes across. Thanks!

If your characters smoke, have one of them light the other's cigarette or have them share a cigarette.

Of course, on a show such as Mad Men, that'd make everyone bosom buddies... :P

Sorry, I actually agree, that just occurred to me.

Walking through the kitchen in the morning and filling each others' cups or handing each other things without asking or noticing they're doing it.

Physical closeness is a pretty good one, as in having characters who like each other sit closer or be closer to one another.

I can't think of an specific examples, though.

Natasha and Clint from The Avengers, where they just sit shoulder to shoulder after having had to whale on each other.

The scene in the credits where Natasha and Clint are sitting at the table, exhausted, and Clint tiredly has his feet up on Natasha's chair and she isn't paying him any mind, when you know by her character that she'd side-eye absolutely anyone else who tried to rest their dirty boots anywhere near her. That was a great little moment, for me.

Yes yes, this. Loved that.

I'd just like to add - also take into account the character's personalities when writing this. (eg. I'm really close to my family, but I'm not cuddly-feely and I hardly ever hug them. That's just the way we are.)

I once saw this really awesome blink-and-you'll-miss-it one: when running across a busy street, each person only looks in one direction for oncoming traffic, automatically knowing that the other one is checking the other direction and won't let them get squashed.

Oh man, I saw this irl once and melted. The couple was holding hands and a conversation with each other the whole time :3

I've seen a couple of times in Supernatural where the boys will look at a threat, realize who should be doing what, and trade weapons--without ever looking at or consulting each other, they just know each other so well.

Eating off each other's plates. (this is more of a big deal in Western tv I think) Knowing that someone doesn't like this food, or that your friend loves this dessert you only kind of like, or anyone else would get sworn at but because it's character X it's ok. (I feel like John and Rodney do this sometimes on SGA? OR maybe that's just fanfic, lol)

Caring about the other person's appearance. Straightening a tie without thinking about it, "That shirt looks good on you", "You hair is sticking up--no, the other side--no--oh for Pete's sake, just come here."

One of my absolute favourite moments on the original CSI was Catherine fixing Grissom's bowtie with "You don't need a diagram, you need a woman."

Your second one is one of my favorite bits in Two Weeks Notice. George and Lucy go to a restaurant and both order the same thing, then automatically proceeed to trade bits of it while talking about something else.

I love that kind of stuff (especially when they're talking about something else like they aren't even doing it)! More so if they order two different things and trade the stuff they like. Especially if one character is putting the stuff they don't like on the other's plate, and the other is just eating it like "Thanks".

A touch conveys so much. Like a simple clasp of a hand, or laying a hand on a shoulder, or the tweak of a strand of hair.

If you have two characters eating, and they eat food from the other one's plate without asking, and without the other character being at all surprised or bothered by it, that tends to indicate some level of closeness. Even more so if they load up their own plates with each other's favorites specifically because they know they'll be stealing from each other.

Also, I remember seeing a reverse of this at the beginning of a movie (can't remember which) to indicate how distant two characters were: the scene was in a restaurant, and the first several shots were of couples' feet all entwined together, with the last shot being of a couple whose feet were firmly planted on the ground well away from each other. So maybe a reverse of that, i.e. lots of shots of people whose hands and feet are well away from each other, except for your close couple whose hands and/or feet are closely entwined.

And this only works for action movies, but if you're going to fight with someone back to back, then you two really have to know each other for that to work (i.e. have some kind of hidden signal between you two to know when to duck, when to lean a certain direction, etc), so while it does get mis-used a lot, I still see back-to-back fighting as a really good indication of closeness.

The movie was Crazy Stupid Love! (My favourite romantic comedy of all time.)

I like the little physical gestures the best, the ones you know the characters don't think about at all but clearly wouldn't engage in with anyone else but those close to them. Like casually sitting shoulder-to-shoulder when there's plenty of space to sit apart, or automatically falling back-to-back in a fight (in a more action/adventure story, two fighters use each other's moves to drive their own without planning or discussion, moves you know must have taken hours of practice together, but they're so accustomed to it that it's nothing now), thoughtless pats on the shoulder or fist-bumps.

Also things like getting their stuff accidentally mixed up or borrowing things from each other without asking and it's not a problem, as a sign of how often they share space. Petty fights, the kind you only get between friends and family who've spent so much time together that they're annoyed by little things, and they're bickering all the live long day, but it's never serious. I dunno, I feel like there's more, but that's all I can think of.

- Not needing to talk a lot, as in Character A knows Character B has had a bad/good day without needing to be told, also having a conversation with each other without noticing the people around them.
- Bringing each other coffee is one that hasn't been mentioned.
- Person Of Interest has quite a few examples of this, after a couple of episodes, if you want a show to look at. They bring each other food/drinks and so on.

I can't think of anything else that hasn't been mentioned...

You got some good answers. People touching without reacting, like - fixing someone's hair, tie, shirt collar, whatever and the one doing the fixing doesn't ask, the one being 'fixed' doesn't flinch or say anything, just accepts it and probably even talks through it without noticing.

Coming into someone's house without knocking, taking stuff out of the 'fridge without asking, that kind of thing.

Knowing that the person is okay, or not, and when to push, when to back off. My SO and his brother (and me and my sister/brothers) can have conversations that consist of movie quotes, books quotes, and half of an anecdote from our childhood. Incomprehensible to 'outsiders',but we know exactly what we're talking about.

Can be insulting/way truthful and the other person might bristle for a moment but they know it's true and aren't *really* pissed.

Know their preferred coffee/food/dessert/pizza topping/restaurant/tv show/whatever.

I always thought the part in one of the Spy Kids movies where the mom is tossing stuff to the dad was pretty cool. I thought it showed how in sync they were.
