Heh. I actually just got a new computer so it's hard for me to find my favorite fics right now, but I can still give you a few recs.

http://queendoms.tumblr.com/post/9082164397/the-carthaginian-woman-ned-cat-r - this fic is one that kind of is a reflection on Cat's life in her final moments. It's not really linear, but it's good.

OMG, I must recommend Game of Stacks (http://archiveofourown.org/works/957122/chapters/1873743). It's a modern AU, and takes place at a library. All of the epic arguments and politics still exist but no one has the power to execute anyone else, which...changes things quite a bit. Parts of it are hilarious, and parts of it are scary, and certain bits brought tears to my eyes.
