Honestly, there are some fandoms where I far prefer fandom over source material. ASoIaF is one of them. Fandom has done so much with the material. And at least a fair amount of people who write fics actually have some idea how they plan to finish them. (They also don't usually take 3+ years to update.)

Oh, fandom's done a lot. Unfortunately most of what it's done is modern AU crap and shitty OCC ship fic.
