Is Transformers really made for little boys? I thought that was a less gendered show than MLP but maybe that's just because I was a little girl who watched it. Or least the 80s version.

I think it's marketed towards them, yes. So are things like shonen anime and their derivatives (some of which I greatly enjoy, as a 23-year-old woman).

Maybe the difference is that people in these categories are less likely to be egotistical asshats, and thus complain less when the show caters to its target audience rather than to them?

And, yeah, growing up you might not realize at first that a show is marketed towards a specific group but I definitely think the target audience for TF is young boys. Doesn't make it Not Okay for girls or adults of any gender to watch it, of course.

I think this is just a case of girls being allowed to like boy things and boys not being allowed to like girl things.

You hit the nail on the head right here.

Wah wah wah. Who the fuck cares?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I have a son, and I care. Boys shouldn't feel pressured or not allowed to like certain things.

NA

Totally agree.

I love the fact that I was wearing a MLP tee shirt and my 8 year old nephew ran up to me and yelled "FLUTTERSHY!!! I LOVE PONIES!" Then said if he was a pony he would marry Rarity. He also loves Spiderman and writes fanfic about him and Spidey taking down evil tigers.

You can blame the "girl things are inherently inferior" culture for that one. AKA: misogyny.

It is irrelevant whether or not "patriarchy hurts men too" is the reason for this, the fact, in the end, is that innocent children are hurt by it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
So patriarchy can hurt all of the adults and "non-innocent" people it wants and you won't give a shit? What does innocence have to do with the bigger picture? It hurts everyone, end of story.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Every time I see the "patriarchy hurts everyone" brought up it's to derail the discussion about the problem men and boys face. What it does, basically, is saying "it's their own fault that they have those problems" and that's especially shitty when you're talking about little kids who have neither privilege in nor influence on the world they live in yet. I agree that the patriarchy might be to blame for a lot of shit, but in the end, always crying "BUT MISOGYNY" when someone says "this situation is shitty for men" doesn't really help anyone.

This x 100000000. It derails the conversation every time it's posted in order to not talk about problems that affect boys/men.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It helps in correctly identifying the problem and thus proposing effective solutions. The problem, "young boy is horrifically bullied and abused for liking a piece of media targeted at girls," has the solution, "push back against cultural messages that teach children that 'girl things' are stupid/weak/bad, which then make boys who enjoy them into acceptable targets of ridicule."

Really? Because I see that sentence brought up frequently because the person saying 'the patriarchy hurts everyone' wants to address an issue pertaining to men/boys within a larger feminist discussion.

But I guess we are probably in different circles. I've never seen anyone I actually associate with blame little boys for the problems they face because of the patriarchy. Men are sometimes blamed, even when they are also suffering, but the women I associate differentiate between 'You personally caused this to happen to you' and 'These are the reasons this has happened to you'.

tldr the feminists I talk to use this phrase to do the opposite of derailing the conversation from problems that affect boys/men.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
Because girl things are seen as inferior. So girl liking boys things = good, because "boy is better". Girls liking girl things is derided for being girl, but still "good" because they're girls. Boys liking girl things are seen as weak/bad because it's a girl thing.

So you can thank misogyny for that.
