Honestly: I'm going to imagine all of these people flailing over themselves to call it sad but NOT stupid have never had to deal with an addict.

Yes, addiction is a disease. It's still stupid. It's heartrendingly stupid. Something can be both tragic and stupid. A good person can do something senseless and stupid.

IA with the last part. Like someone dying because they were driving drunk and crashed into a tree. It's stupid. It's senseless. If you're going to argue that it isn't stupid and senseless, I'm going to think you're an idiot. That doesn't mean the driver was a terrible horrible person that deserved to die. Being stupid doesn't mean you deserve that, all it means is you did a stupid thing.

This. JP's 'stupid' is not condemnation of PSH, it's a comment on his the factors that led to his death.

Are you sure? His "apology" tweets don't really paint it in that light.

+1 this is the best common sense response.

Agreed. And I agree with what Jared said about PSH's death, which should not be mistaken as saying something about PSH.

As an addict who's been in recovery for 14 years, I think it's sad but mostly stupid and senseless and a reminder of how tenuous any addict's grasp on recovery is. It scared me to learn he'd relapsed after 23 years and then died less than a year later because I think I'd honestly forgotten that it could happen to me, too. The whole thing is sad and scary and stupid and senseless.

Doesn't excuse him tweeting something like that about someone he didn't know to hundreds of thousands of people while the man's family was probably still struggling to comprehend the loss.

Yeah, that was kind of a dick move. Who is this guy again?

I agree it may have been inappropriate, but it's not like he was the only celebrity talking about it. He's allowed to voice his thoughts just like everyone else... I doubt his family saw Jared's tweet anyway.

That's the thing: I always am very reluctant to pity drunk idiots dying in car crashes , but I sure as hell pity their relatives and friends.

+1

...And that's all I'm gonna say in this thread.

This. It's stupid and senseless because he had so many things to live for. It's stupid and senseless and tragic because he had three young children who should never have had to lose their father like that.
