Random Questions

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
How often does everyone have really random questions they suddenly *need* the answer to, or something you wonder about that just keeps circling around in your head?

This happens to me all the time. Right now I keep trying to figure out what noise the people 3000+ years ago made to get babies to eat food. Now parents do the "Here comes the airplane/train/car/ect" and make the appropriate onomatopoeia, but what did, say, baby Aristotle's mom do to get him to eat?

During the end of the year I can get those kinds of questions answered in the NaNoWriMo forums, lol!

As for your specific question, I bet they had a different attitude about food and it was like "Ok, kid, come back when you're good and hungry then." I know with my homestay sister when I was living in Korea, her nanny wouldn't coax her into eating anything, but would just kind of keep the food to hand and periodically stick it in her mouth when she was distracted. Same!

Smart Phones are really awesome, and I don't know how I survived without it!

Speaking of babies, I was wondering how common it really is for little kids to ask where babies come from. It's a weirdly specific thing to ask. Why babies? Where does anything come from?

Then I thought back to my earliest memories about it, and I just know I knew babies came from pregnant mommies and it didn't occur to me that there was anything more to it than that.

That is a weirdly specific thing to ask now that you mention it.

As far as I know, it's not really "common", exactly. Rather, every kid tends to ask where everything comes from, but asking about where babies comes from tends to stand out because of how awkward that question is for most people. Then in popular media, whenever you need a kid to put a grown-up on the spot somehow, that's the go-to question.

It depends on how frank and open your parents were with you about sex as a child, and your particular experience with pregnancy at an early age. If you are aware that humans reproduce sexually before your friends start spouting "Mommy said that the stork brings babies." then you're probably not likely to need to ask that question.

For my part, my parents - one of whom was a psychologist - introduced me and my sibling to the idea of sex when we were around three years old, in a responsible and sex-positive manner. We were given a book which showed non-sexualized nudity, which explained it in an approachable and friendly way. (In case you are wondering, the book was Where Did I Come From by Peter Mayle. I would recommend it to any parent, with the caution that it focuses on heterosexual orientations so if you're a queer parent or want your child to have a greater understanding of sexuality adding other reading material would be necessary.)

Honest answer, from a psychological standpoint... probably the same damn stimulus mothers use to encourage their children to eat food now. You're actually incorrect in assuming that it's, "Here comes the airplane." (probably because that's what you've seen in popular media)- I can tell you as an uncle and a psychologist that children don't automatically respond to that; that is not the trick one uses to get a child who is ready to eat solid food to open their mouths and eat.

What children do start being able to do when they reach the age of being able to eat solid food, is mimicking facial expressions. That's one of the key reasons that spoon-feeding babies actually works. In order to get a child to open its mouth, a parent (or surrogate feeder) simply has to open their mouth. Saying "ahhhh" or similar is optional, but might be useful to maintain interest and attention.

Getting the kid to swallow and enjoy the food is another matter, of course, but it really is as simple as that.

I always wanted to know what happened to Superman's suit once he left it in the phone booth. Does he tuck it inside his supersuit? Where does his wallet go? If he leaves it in the phone booth does anyone ever steal it?
