thing is, he doesn't ever have to read it if he doesn't want to.

Sure, I realize, I think it's more like him disliking the idea of writing his characters "wrong".

He didn't mind the TV writers writing his characters wrong. But I guess it's different when he's getting paid...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the assumption he was actually heavily involved in the adaptation, and that some characters were specifically renamed because they were changed too much.

He is involved, and one character was changed so greatly that her name had to be changed. But there's still a lot of changes in terms of characterization. Catelyn is the most glaring example. In the books, she urged Ned to accept the position of Hand and was happy that her daughter was going to be the future queen. Somebody decided that the Good Woman isn't supposed to be ambitious and so the TV show had her begging Ned to stay home.

I won't even get started that's the mess with the supporting characters in Dany's sphere.
