I think cigarette smoke is fucking disgusting and rude smokers are awful, but not everyone who smokes is rude ya know.

I know some of the nicest people who have a nicotine addiction (like, pack-a-day bad) but I just can't be mean to them for that. I have very bad lungs due to multiple hospitalizations related to them, so I'm very sensitive to smoke and the smell of it left on people's clothes, but I can't tell them to fuck off or anything. The most I can do is turn on my desk fan at work and blow the fumes away from me so I'm not affected by them.

If I could find a way to stop people from smoking, I would. It doesn't help anyone in the long run, but there's nothing one person can do about it. You can't just take a smoke away from someone and spray them with a bottle and say "Shame on you! Smoking is bad!"

I can agree to this, but personally, I find the new e-cigs the most irritating. At least regular cigarettes don't choke you out with overdone peppermint-cinnamon smoke.

Even non-rude smokers can cause problems. Even if they only smoke in designated smoking areas, they still come back into the building reeking of smoke, which can still set off somebody's asthma.

This is true. I definitely have a strong preference for smokers to only smoke at home and generally dislike smoking in public for this reason.

Never having had a physical addiction I find it hard to judge. I do think it would generally be the best option for everyone if they tried to quit. It's an inherently imposing habit especially if you do it outside your home/car.

I also kinda judge people who smoke with kids at home...I had a boss once who smoked in his house despite the fact that his youngest daughter was asthmatic and I thought that was so dickish...

This. The scent of cigarette smoke gives my friend migraines, period. The person doesn't have to be smoking right there in front of her to set it off; just being near her with clothing that smells of smoke can trigger a migraine. The same goes for people who wear too much perfume.

some people are set off not by 'too much' perfume -- which is entirely subjective anyway -- but by the scent of any amount of perfume at all. do you think, therefore, that people should completely abstain from wearing perfume or cologne?

I have a friend who has this issue with deodorant. Somehow I doubt anyone is going to launch a campaign against scented deodorant.

In certain places? Yes. I work in a hospital that is ostensibly 'scent free'. Staff, patients, visitors, etc, are all reminded to avoid using scented products before coming in there, because some people ARE that sensitive.

A co-worker can smell/be nauseated by lotions that I can't even smell on other people, and she can't work with thirty feet of them if they're wearing it because she'll literally be made ill from it.

While I don't expect the general public to think about this while walking outside/shopping etc (though it'd be nice), if you're going to be in a confined space such as airplanes/public transport/your work if it's an office or other enclosed area, then yes I think people should refrain from using as much overly scented products as they can.

Almost everything comes unscented these days, it's not hard to pick up unscented hand lotion or deodorant.

Exactly. You aren't going to die if you can't douse yourself in perfume. I like to wear body sprays sometimes, but if one of my friends told me the scent bothered them, then I'd simply stop wearing it around them. It's not like it's some huge sacrifice because you don't need it.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
But to go along with the theme of this conversation, you should NEVER wear your body sprays. Ever.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Perfume sets off some people's asthma too yet there's no widespread clamor for perfume/scent-free environments :/

It's not like perfume is any more necessary than a cigarette.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-04 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
A lot of people hate people who use heavy perfume, but the demand for people not using it isn't as great because smokers are more noticeable and smoke more consistently than people who use heavy scents.

Yeah, obviously you've never had a classmate, coworker or roommate who used so much body spray/cologne/perfume that they would choke you out of a room even if you AREN'T asthmatic. Those people are worse than even the most inconsiderate smokers I've ever meet simply because they refuse to acknowledge that anyone could possibly have any kind of problem or issue and not either be completely overreacting our just looking for something to bitch about.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-11 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I think pretty much every school or workplace I've been in has been dedicated as a 'scent-free' environment, where people ostensibly should not be wearing perfume/strongly scented products.

However, I've never actually encountered troublesome body scents outside of soap stores and such, yet I have had unpleasant encounters with smoke regularly (especially at bus stops. Smoking at bus stops is just so damn rude, I swear).
