Anyway, couscous is definitely not a common thing to eat at a cinema, haha. In fact most of the time there's nobody eating during the movie, except maybe one or two people with popcorn. On the other hand couscous is pretty common at casual movie nights, so I guess this cinema was more of a private thing between a select group of people?
Re: Cinemas around the world.
I had guessed it was a quite private thing (what with the setup and being hidden in a catacomb). The couscous part, at least, was something I knew I could ask to a French among the things that piqued my attention in that anecdote. Here we don't eat it as much, but it's more like rice or potatoes - a side dish.
People here eat at the big cinemas (multiplexes?), which is something we copied from the Gringos. But at the smaller ones, which usually show indie/intellectual movies ("Cine-Arte", we call it), it's not something done.
