The funniest example I can think of is the Twin Peaks fandom, where many refuse to introduce the show to their friends or family because they think the show it "too smart" for most people to understand.

Nevermind the fact that the show is over two decades old and was one of the most popular shows on network television back in the day.

something tells me that they don't actually thuinkm it's 'too smart;' they recognize its limitations and don't want anyone else to notice and/or bring them up.

in other words, they want to project and protect an image of intelligence that they know deep down is bullshit.
