Someone wanted me to read this series of books. I tried. I think I read the first four chapters of book one. I kept them for a month. I eventually read the wiki summaries and pretended I read them.

I feel that way about a lot of drawn media. It's 100% OK.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
If you're seriously worried about the consequences of telling a friend you're not into a piece of media they enjoy, it may be time to reevaluate the friendship.

I know this was not the response you were looking for, but this secret made me remember that I enjoyed one of her works (Solanin) and should totally check out some more. So, uh. Thanks, I guess. ._.;;

What's wrong with the style? Seems relatively normal to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's okay, if you don't want to read something because of the stye. I like Asano's art but I guess I can see why some would find it unappealing.

This reminds me that his only work I finished is Punpun, I should get to read the rest.

Just tell them. I had a friend tell me something like this and you know what? I was like, "okay" and I fucking dropped it. If your friend throws a fit they're a ninny.

I feel disappointed and a bit sad when I recommend to friends something I really love and they don't give it a try. I can understand OP's feelings. I doubt they think there will be any kind of drama, they just probably want to avoid disappointing their friend. At least that's how I feel when I'm in that situation (right now I've a friend telling me to watch Once Upon a Time and I don't know how to tell them that I don't want to watch an average show without sounding like a pretentious piece of shit).

Is it because he appears to sexualize very little children? That's what's putting me off right now.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
How is that pic sexualized in any way?

Inio Asano is a SHE. SHE. It doesn't matter if she hasn't had a sex change operation yet, she is a woman for god's sake.

I don't think anybody intends offense. I think they probably didn't know that.

That's really interesting, because I've loved everything of the art that I've seen around tumblr and have been dying to read this just as an artist who wants to learn things, but I worry I won't be able to handle the themes of abuse/incest/ect that I hear at least punpun has. Different strokes for different folks?

I'm curious as to what specifically bothers you about that art, but hey, you should tell your friend the truth, they're friends after all, if they're good friends they won't hold it against you. Personally I love all of Inio Asano's works but if someone told me, sorry, the art is not my cup of tea, I'd totally understand.

You should just tell them. It's your opinion, and your aesthetic sense. Quite honestly, as long as you're polite about it, if they're a jerk about it it is 100% on them.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. A friend of mine has recced me some manga, but I just cannot read them because of the ugly art style. I'm sure the stories are great, but I can't stand looking at art unnapealing to me.

(However, I have to say, the art on your secrets looks way better than the mangas recced to me)

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
Just fucking tell them. Not liking a manga shouldn't be something that causes a rift in your friendship. And if it does, your friend is a dick.

It definitely depends on the person, but you might be able to enjoy the story even if you don't care for the art that much. Inio definitely has a specific style of writing as well though, so no idea if that would happen. But if I didn't read something because I thought the art was ugly, I would have missed out on great things like Gotham Central, which is one of my favourite comics even though visually I don't think it's that great (though the style does fit the film noir aspect).

You're not missing much.

The only crying I did over Oyasumi PunPun was because it bored me to tears.

I also don't care for Asano's art, but I'm always willing to overlook art I find displeasing in favor of the story or characters. I've tried a bunch of their titles and none of them are particularly interesting.
