Well, I know I have a lot of relatives I'm not actually very close to, whereas you could 'get to know' Yar really well on the show...it's an artificial intimacy but that doesn't mean your emotions are artificial.

Her death was pretty sad and senseless. :,(

Yeah, I think that's the thing that made it worse. The fact that her death meant nothing made it harder to deal with.

Yesterday's Enterprise timeline 4-EVA

(but Data having original-timeline Yar hologram, in spite of the fact that it's invoking The Naked Now, made me all ;^;)

>_< I couldn't deal with that one either.

This hologram (and the attendant wangst) also featured very prominently in an early ST:TNG Pocket Book. Data got emotions (this was years before the chip was even featured on the show) and his first emotion was his overwhelming love for Tasha...and then his world-crushing grief. D-:

"What do you mean, it's not for kids?"

I read one like that. It's a book where Data is literally made human ("Metamorphosis") and another person realizes that, as a human being, Data has internalized the feelings he had as "love" for Tasha.

Damn, that book made me weep. I re-read it couple of years ago and still really enjoyed it.

I agree. :(

I also just thought that episode was kinda bad.

I didn't even like Six Feet Under and I sobbed through the whole last episode. I think it might've been because I subconsciously knew how ill my mother was (this was a month before her death) and I put all this emotion into seeing these stupid characters die. It was naturally nowhere near grief for a loved one because grief for a loved one doesn't go away after a couple days but still, I know the feel, as they say, of reacting strongly to canon character death.

I loved Yar, I wanted to be like her when I was a kid. When it was revealed that Data kept her holo around due to them being intimate I was an overjoyed little kid because I had such a crush on him.

It was so thoughtful of them to hold her funeral in the Windows XP Desktop

She always felt most productive there

I love the fact that Data kept her hologram, and couldn't really explain why he kept it. The whole idea is so lovely.

For me her death was my first "Anyone can die." Experience. From the prime time shows I watched as a kid during the 80's the only time someone got killed they were special guest characters were only intended for one or twp episodes. So her death was a major impact on me.

I adored Natasha Yar and was devastated when she died. I knew it was gonna happen, but I thought I'd get at least a full season...! Several months later, I'm halfway through the sixth season and still upset about her.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I was actually glad when Yar died; I found her character really annoying. That said, I've had characters whose loss I mourned more than my own relatives' before too. Perhaps some part of me affiliated with them more than I do with my family... though maybe, because it's a fictional death (combined with being a character I care about), it's an 'appropriate' outlet for whatever emotional stress I'm already going through. Or maybe both theories are complete BS, idk.
