Everyone says racist. I thought the problem was that the directors were too damned cheap to hire new actors that they kept on recycling the ones they had. "Well, we have so many dollar for special FX and make-up and so many dollars for actors. Screw it. Let's put all the money in FX and make up and Tom Hanks can play twenty roles." (The truth is the directors did indeed kept on giving new characters for the small pool of actors to play during the filming of the movie.)

I always saw it as reinforcing the point of people reincarnating/being the same souls.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
But that wasn't the case in some plot lines. The reincarnated souls were placed in different actors not the same actor over and over again.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
As they would be placed in different bodies.

It's a bit of A and a bit of B, in my opinion? :o

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this is the case. Anyone who sees racism or, lol!, cheapness, isn't capable of understanding the story's underlying themes.

The casting was...weird. I see where they were trying to go with it, but it didn't always work.

Anyway, could you possibly just ship the book characters?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to spoil heavily, but it's a little different in the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I was into the obvious Ishmael/Queequeg dudes. I was annoyed when Ishmael character went home and his soulmate was his redheaded wife. Wtf?? Cmon! Not!Ishmael & not!Queequeg obvs had a more epic romance.

Eh, I liked Sonmi and Hae-joo too much not to feel completely overjoyed with they were reunited (in movie timeline; technically their reunion was the Neo Seoul timeline) as Tilda and Adam.

you know that's a really good point I hadn't considered: How the racefail impacts shipping. I mean now that I think about it, I wonder how she was able to kiss that man without throwing up all over him. It would be like a black girl being forced to kiss a black and white minstrel. I think I wouldn't be able to live with myself once that movie cam out if I were her.

Please repeat after me:

"Not everyone construes race as 'Murica."

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I can repeat it, but I think I'd like you to explain it first.

You did a comparation with minstrelsy, which is pretty much an USA/Western Europe only thing. Actually, the only reason I know of this at all is because everyone kept referencing Black/Yellow/Redfacing. It's not a cultural or historical mark here, and we're not so far away from you.

Latin Americans experience race in a different way than the white westerners, and I know for a fact East Asians do so as well. The idea of "White Privilege", for example, is a western concept. Just look onto how foreigners, no matter the color, are percieved in Japan.

Admittedly, I do not know a lot about Korea, but it'd be safer to give them the benefit of doubt as well.

How about the mere fact that the Asian masks made the actors look like literal monsters? I legit did not know if Hugo Weaving was supposed to be HUMAN.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
YES OMG that legit made me uncomfortable... like in a creeped-out way

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I assumed at first that they were meant to look odd because they were Consumers, and to stress the point of the Fabricants human-ness, they looked more natural.

But then there were just regular Korean Consumers, so nope.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's not racist. Minstrel shows and blackface are racist because they mock and exaggerate and dehumanize races. Actors change genders and sexualities too. It was there to enhance the overall theme of interconnectivity. It didn't mock any race or play into stereotypes. Besides looking a little stupid because the make-up wasn't quite good enough, it certainly didn't try to exaggerate.

At the most, it's unfair to other actors, but I personally felt that the casting choices made the story more moving to me. Seeing Tilda together with Adam was much more meaningful because of Sonmi and Hae-joo. Hugo Weaving spouting the same racial hierarchy crap in Neo-Seoul and in the Caribbean made the point stronger. Seeing Tom Hanks fluctuate from complete crook, to thug, to passive (and eventually repentant), then finally to the full evolution of his soul as a man capable of showing true compassion and bravery was much stronger than if they had cast a different person in each role, personally.

Sometimes the decision didn't work. But I felt that it worked more when it did and made it so much better than it made it worse when it didn't.

+1

yeah, this. it's not like only white actors got to play other races. Of course the power balance is different, but it was never a mockery and it was due to a concept anon described here.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 09:08 am (UTC)(link)
You could try and think beyond your SJW brainwashing and see that the artistic choices made by the directors added beautifully to the story's themes and weren't racist, except in the minds of people who enjoy that kind of outrage.

Enjoy your shipping. The movie isn't racist.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The Media Action Network For Asian-Americans is SJW?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 10:58 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously? Now Cloud Atalas is racist?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my, you're late to the party, haha. The SJW have been bitching since it came out...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Y'know, I watched Cloud Atlas, and then I watched Tropic Thunder, and I wondered how the hell they did such a great job with RDJ but the makeup for Cloud Atlas was so...creepy.
