But...he is sort of meek. That doesn't mean he's not smart or competent, but he does give off that vibe personality-wise.

And being a profiler =/= action hero cop.

iirc he was a cop before he was a profiler though.

He didn't seem nearly as meek at the beginning of the series, just quiet and very antisocial. The trauma conga line that was Season 1, especially the encephalitis, showed us a different side of him than he normally showed.

And he was a regular cop, before the events of the show. Says so in episode 2, when he and Beverly Katz are in the shooting gallery.

That's exactly it. I saw someone just bypassing Will and calling Hugh Dancy an omega boy the other day, lol.

I'm halfway through season 1 but from what I've seen it's established in the first episode that he does have other people protecting him? I mean Alana and Jack are pretty much constantly watching over him.

They totally are. Alana and Jack care about Will's mental state (more Alana). I don't think Will is meek, but he does need people to look out for him when it comes to Hannibal and his mind trickery.

I only watch casually but he's...really woobified. Frankly, I don't see how fanon could portray him as more wilting and broken than he is in canon.

He is all that, and yet somehow he's not weak. That's what makes it so interesting.

You'd be surprised. Some fanfics have him as Hannibal's broken-down housewife who never leaves the house and never speaks to anyone willingly and spends all day...I don't know...gardening or cooking Hannibal's murder meals.

Somehow I doubt canon-Will would be very happy with that scenario.

idk if i'd agree with that, tbh. will is mentally unstable, avoids social interaction, and incapable of looking after himself independently.

but i don't know if i'd classify him as weak, delicate, or incapable of looking after himself in a physical situation (i.e. looking after himself in a fight or a hostage situation). which seems to be how fandom likes portraying him. the man might be sick in the mind, but he's hardly useless.

I don't think you're very far off the mark. He's written as hopelessly pathetic or total bad-ass, depending which is more convenient for the plot.

Exactly - and that sounds pretty useless to me, except for the fact that Hannibal gets someone to blame shit on.

Agreed, except for the "incapable of looking after himself independently" point. He wasn't capable this season, but that's because of the encephalitis. Normally, I figured he was functional.

Fangirls like woobies and will often write characters OOC (or at least exaggerate a character's woobieish qualities) to fulfil that desire; news at eleven!

This is the fandom that consists of like 80% cannibal puns and flower crowns. The fandom's widespread interpretation of Hannibal himself can pretty much be summed up by Ke$ha howling "I AM CANNIBAL CANNIBAL I'LL EAT YOU UP".

(PS this is not to say in the slightest that I don't love the Hannibal fandom. It is by far the best fandom I've ever encountered. I'll take comic sans captions and simplified character readings over the ship wank and hyperdefensiveness that goes on in other fandoms. Rock on, Fannibals)
