Is homophobia just another branch of misogyny

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Was thinking about this all today, and I think yes. Let me explain my reasoning.

Heterosexual men hate gays. This is known. Their mental image of the average gay is the mincing lisping well dressed bottom etc etc. They generally consider this behaviour to be effeminate and womanly and therefore bad. Just like the "Boys who can cook or who look after children are faggots" mentality in the common heterosexual male. It's just another example of the "womanly = bad, manly = good" bullshit.

What do you guys think? am I on to something here? Do you think this idea could change anything? I mean, we're all very familiar with the "Gay men hate women almost as much as straight men" situation as it's very evident in fandom, but do you think if this idea of homophobia being a symptom of misogyny rather than a separate issue in it's own right became accepted, do you think it would convert more gays into being anti-misogyny?

I'm a (mostly) heterosexual man and I have no idea what the fuck you're babbling about.

S/he's asking if we think homophobia is related to hatred of women and feminine qualities attributed to gay men.

Not really. There certainly is a lot of overlap, but that doesn't make them the same thing. There is always overlap between different types of prejudice. But there is still a separate prejudice against homosexuality.

Not all heterosexual guys are homophobic!

...With that out of the way, I think pretty much every type of prejudice is a branch of people being really weird about groups that aren't their own.

You're saying nothing that hasn't already been said, and while there may be some truth to how femininity is viewed, which can be extrapolated out into misogyny, I reject your premise that "Heterosexual men hate gays."

Re: Is homophobia just another branch of misogyny

This, and also "Gay men hate women almost as much as straight men". I wonder if OP knows any gay men.

Re: Is homophobia just another branch of misogyny

(Anonymous) 2014-02-05 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
There's probably some people for whom that's true, and there's overlap for other people, but no, I don't think there's a necessary link between them. I think it's overly simplistic to say so. You're relying too much on the equation of being homosexual with being feminine, which exists but which is not absolute. And I think you can make the case to gay men about why they shouldn't be misogynists perfectly well without making this rather tenuous assessment.

There is definitely misogyny present in a lot of the expressions of homophobia but I still think we need to look at sexism and heterosexism as different things that will require different solutions. There are plenty of people who are heterosexist in ways that have nothing to do with misogyny.

Re: Is homophobia just another branch of misogyny

I believe misogyny and homophobia are related. I don't know why you connect the stereotype that gay men hate women to fandom because fandom has very little to do with actual gay men (and the gay men involved in my fandoms are often very positive about female characters in general).

Ehm, no.

To begin with it sort of bugs me one would make a phobia about gay men about women. I mean, obviously there is some overlap, but that does not make it come from the same source.

I do not think homophobia is inherently present in straight people, and I think it's largely culturally dependent on culture, as the views of your own surroundings about gay people largely affect your own.

Objectively, a straight person has absolutely no reason to hate gay people, because it has nothing to do with them - if anything, it actually eliminates competition for potential partners.

Even if some people might feel naturally disgusted by gay sex, I never had the problems of gay people choosing to fornicate in my back yard, so you know, who cares?

I'm absolutely convinced it ties in both with an unfortunate religious tradition it being "sinful" and macho culture.

Whilst I've always loved the quote "homophobia is the fear by straight men that gay men will treat them the way they treat women", I don't think it's really true in the vast majority of cases.

Not everything is about you nonny, and viewing things through a single perspective is about as silly as all those who render every social conflict through a marxist lens.

speaking as a woman, I think you're trying WAY too hard to make something that is not remotely about women, be about women. Not everything has to involve us, you know. Gay dudes are allowed to have their issues without it being all about us.

Homophobia being related to or inspired by misogyny is not anywhere near a new concept. It's been mentioned and discussed on this forum several times that I know of.

Step up your trolling because you're never going to stir up properly sanctimonious wank with this kind of weak material.

Okay, you asked for it.

I think those attitudes are often correlated and partly for the reasons you listed, but I also think it's a very simplistic model.

Homophobia and racism and sexism and classism and other fun stuff like that are interrelated. They overlap & support each other. Which is why your racist old grandpa is also likely to be sexist & homophobic.
