My cousins murderer is asking to be released from prison almost 12 years early after 10 years in prison, because and I quote his lawyer “He wants the matter to be laid to rest.”…

Laid to rest? What about us you fucking idiot? I will never get my best friend back, none of us will ever get to see her grow up and you are the reason, man up and finish the jail time!

The fucker does not deserve to be released yet, seriously! 10 years on and this comes to haunt me, damn I am trying my hardest to get over the loss of my best friend, and now the idiot is trying to get out of jail.

Anyway my bad week just got worse, hopefully you guys are doing better!

That's a silly excuse for getting out of jail early. Seriously.

No kidding, if his statement was anything else, like: "I regret what I did" or "I wish I could change the past, but I can't. And as I feel like even if I can't change the past I will not repeat my past mistakes." then it would be better, but seriously?

Scary thing is that he qualifies, 10 years was the minimum set, and he is done with 10 years now... I am just hoping that they will say no, because in the original trial he was sentenced to 21 years and the judge noted that there was nothing redeeming* about what he did and that is why he got the longest sentence he could get by law. Anyway now I will probably get through weeks of discussions in the Media about the case, because when it happened it was huge as in we put my cousin in the ground with all newspapers and television channels filming and taking pictures. So that will be fun...

*as in no mental illness or any other redeeming factor that could make your sentence shorter.

I feel like anything I could have to say would be inadequate. I'm not even sure where to start but if you need anything I'm here.

Don't worry dear, I am mostly just angry. What happens will happen, I can't get my cousin back no matter what.

I'm not worried but I am your friend and as you said, you are angry. Friends are there for friends when they're angry.

I don't what the process is like where you live but is it possible for your family to make an impact statement or write to the parole board?

Early release should not be a thing. Convicted killers should serve their full sentences.

No I can't and I would not even if I could, he will get a release if the court decides he is ready to get released, they are not allowed to judge him based on his previous actions only on his rehabilitation*. As that is what our justice system is based on, rehabilitate criminals because one day they will get out.

I have full trust in the justice system to handle this the correct way**, I am just angry at him for applying to get released... And the state lawyer is making a pretty good case to keep him in jail a while longer, especially the double murderer part of it.

*Having killed twice at different times will be taken into account tho.
**Even if that is to release him.

Well of course he wants the matter to be laid to rest. I imagine he wanted the matter to be laid to rest on the first day he was in prison as well. That's a ridiculous reason to let him out of jail. Can you imagine if we just gave everyone that prerogative? "I know I've been sentenced to life in prison, Your Honor, but I think it'd just work a lot better for me if we all just forgot about the whole thing."

I hope everything works out, it sounds like a really crappy situation and I can hardly even imagine.

One way or another it will work out, I wish I could say it is the crappiest thing in my life, but nah it is just the top of the iceberg, but I will be okay.

That is horrible. I'm sorry you're going through that. When someone who willingly wronged and hurt another person takes on the attitude that it is ~in the past~, implying that yet again they expect control and if they're over it their victims are being unreasonable, without even attempting to apologize or make amends it is infuriating enough. I can't imagine what it must be like when the act of injury took someone you loved from you. I'm really sorry and I wish I knew what to say. *hugs*

You don't have to say anything, I just needed to vent a bit, I will be okay in the end, I always am.

*and so on my cousin was 11 she did not deserve what he did to her especially everything on top of him killing her, nor did the poor 18 year old girl he killed 15ish years before that.

He pulled that shit twice and still has the huevos to say he wants to "lay this ~matter~ to rest"?!? The only approaching acceptable context for that is if he is trying to say he is suicidal.

Yeah, and yes it is. Any other reason would have been better, especially if he had a part where he said he regretted doing it...

At least you can be relatively certain that most states don't just let people out of prison because they think they deserve to be let out.

Well Norwegian justice system and the American is a bit different, That is just the public statement, the case they are making in the courthouse is not open for the public and will probably be centred around how he has taken steps to get better: Shrink, applying to be chemically castrated, being a model prisoner and so on.

He has served the 10 required years of his sentence, not it is in the hands of the courts to decide if they think he is rehabilitated or not.

Based on what you've said elsewhere it doesn't sound like he really can be rehabilitated.

If he wants the matter "laid to rest," he should accept that his sentence is far less than he deserves, and patiently serve it to the end without pissing and moaning about it, then go away where no one he has harmed will ever have to think about him again, not demand release after less than half of his term is up, while making sure his victim's family will have to see and hear about him in the press.

His sentence is the longest he could be given and in a roundabout way it could be life in prison...

The thing is that he is just an idiot, and we will never get rid of him, with him being my step uncle, or well he was... He has children that are related to my cousin(s)... He is connected to my family in two ways not counting killing my cousin and explaining that would probably need charts or something so I wont, but he will always be a part of us, but up 'till now it has been a part that was not heard from....

I'm sorry, OP that sounds like total bullshit and I hope he doesn't get out. "Laid to rest"?? It was laid to rest when he got a prison sentence for murdering someone, that's the whole point. Murderers aren't supposed to find closure or a happy ending, ffs.

I suppose it's as close as might be, for all the people he harmed, but obviously he doesn't give any more of a shit about them than he ever did.
