Despite what some people will say about "slut-shaming," there's nothing wrong with not liking promiscuity in a character.

*slut-shaming in "scare quotes" (known to the grownups as quotation marks, quote marks or sometimes double quotes) not because I don't think it's a real phenomena, I just think it's a ridiculous term.

I wish it were called something like "promiscuity shaming" or "sex shaming". They make a bit more sense.

You can't say you dislike any kind of sexual behavior without being labeled a slut-shamer. I also dislike infidelity.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I don't think there are many people who actually approve of it. Promiscuity doesn't always mean infidelity, but in fictional characters they tend to go together.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
The two aren't equivalent. Infidelity hurts someone. It's a betrayal of trust. Just having a lot of sex isn't betraying anyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Question: since you know it's a real phenomenon, why do you think it's a ridiculous term?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
Not the person you replied to, obviously, but I do agree with their opinion on the term. For me, it's the fact that "slut" is itself a pejorative. It comes off a little like saying "oh, we know s/he has revolting sexual habits, but we're not supposed to talk about it" - like the negative discussion of someone's sexual habits is the problem, not the fact that some asshole thinks they have the right to judge someone else's sexual habits* in the first place.

*Assuming, for the sake of this discussion, that all parties involved in said sexual habits are fully consenting.

Because using a derogatory term for people to talk about how being derogatory toward those same people is ridiculous.
