Strangely enough, I actually have a weak spot for promiscuous men, especially in fiction (my tastes seem more tame in real life). I guess I just like people who are unapologetically sexual.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Same, but I also like promiscuous women. Unf.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It is perfectly possible to be "unapologetically sexual" and monogamous, tyvm.

Monogamy is not a sign of low libido or shame, whatever the stupid 'meeja' tell you. It is a choice, often a very positive one.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda feel the same? Maybe it's because characters written as promiscuous are more likely to be written as unfaithful as well, and I really can't enjoy infidelity.

This!

Despite what some people will say about "slut-shaming," there's nothing wrong with not liking promiscuity in a character.

*slut-shaming in "scare quotes" (known to the grownups as quotation marks, quote marks or sometimes double quotes) not because I don't think it's a real phenomena, I just think it's a ridiculous term.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I wish it were called something like "promiscuity shaming" or "sex shaming". They make a bit more sense.

Question: since you know it's a real phenomenon, why do you think it's a ridiculous term?

I don't share this particular sentiment, but I can never bring myself to like ladies who get pregnant. I don't think it's wrong or even particularly gross, it's just... a bunch of feelings and events that make absolutely no sense to me. I lose contact with the character when their pregnancy is described in any great detail.

mte

Maybe it's because I absolutely have no desire to get pregnant myself idk
In the character's position I'd be like 'omg what is this nooo everything but this please make it stop' and I'm projecting like mad

I don't usually like the writing for pregnant characters. It also doesn't help that, when a character becomes pregnant, everything seems to revolve around their pregnancy. I understand it involves a pretty big lifestyle change, but it's just not that interesting to me.

As somebody with no sex drive they're just plain less relatable to me if they spend a whole lot of their screen time chasing tail. I don't mind the promiscuity but it annoys me when flirting and sex takes up too much screen time that could have been used for other things. Iron Man didn't bug me because while the promiscuity was mentioned a lot, it didn't dwell on it for half an hour that could have been used on superheroics otherwise or anything.

Yep, pretty much. I don't mind it as long as the narrative does not consist of it.

For me it depends. If the character is skeevy and exploitative about it, I have a problem with it. Tony toes that line sometimes. But if they are just comfortable with their sexuality and like sex I don't care one way or another. I actually find it appealing in a female character more so than male ones.

This is how I feel about promiscuous characters too, though I have no preference for male or female characters.

This is generally true for me as well, I think it's because I'm very, very monogamous by nature so that I can't relate to the desire to be, or actions of being, promiscuous. Sexuality can be a big part of how a character is developed and it's hard to get into a character who has such a huge divide between their sexual expression and mine. There are exceptions, of course. I think that the exceptions for me are mostly characters where their promiscuity is either not an integral part of who they are as a character, or else when the rest of their personality is so interesting or charming to me that I can overlook it.

I think it's refreshing that you dislike it but doesn't morally judge characters and people for it.

Personally, I really like characters like that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm poly, so I guess they're more? relateable. However, promiscuous characters in fiction of whatever gender usually come with a side or main serving of "douche".

[personal profile] intrigueing 2014-02-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, tbf, a lot of authors can't seem to understand that not all promiscuous characters need to come lumped along with a whole bunch of other "promiscuous person" character traits that don't necessarily follow logically in every situation, but are ALWAYS dragged along for the ride in a stereotypical bundle like fries with a burger, or like a linked gene.
nyxelestia: Rose Icon (Default)

Wait, is it promiscuity itself or just a trend?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-02-06 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Because that last line you mentioned methinks you don't actually care about promiscuity - it really is just a common thread/trend among characters you don't like. Which wouldn't be all that surprising - promiscuity tends to go hand in hand with a certain kind of character/characterization, so it would make sense that if you dislike certain types of characters, promiscuity ends up being a noticeable trend among them...so it wouldn't actually be the promiscuity that makes you dislike a character, it just connects all the characters you dislike/like less.

Repeat?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-06 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone feel like this is a repeat? I swear I've seen the exact same image with the exact same topic laid over it in the 2013 archive before.
