I personally have hopes that the age difference being more visible (well, visible in human terms considering he's 100s of years older really) will change the currently established dynamic somewhat BUT

I have also been around Doctor Who long enough to know that even the classic Doctors with their not-as-conventional looks get shipped with companions so I won't be annoyed to see shipping. It happens. If it's not my thing I just walk on by.

Would like to point out though that I agree with you that older doesn't mean people can't find him attractive!

You're not alone! I didn't really like Eleven/Clara so much, but I'm totally on-board for Twelve/Clara. Though I guess it also depends on what kind of dynamic they end up having... if they make him too fatherly to her or something, that could kind of kill it for me.

Well, shipping in fandom is a very, very different animal than shipping in canon.

I am totally on board with people shipping away and discovering subtext between the characters, I just really hope the show stops intentionally trying to put it there.

Something tells me that there will be a significant amount of shippers for this pairing, judging by how many people I've seen on tumblr who find Capaldi attractive. So you're not alone, OP! I don't think he's bad-looking either.

I want Twelve/Romana to happen so badly. A very long shot, but a girl can dream.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I want Clara to leave, in some tasteful fashion. I don't dislike her, I'm just not very interested in her.

Then I want the Doctor to happen across Ace McShane, who used to be a crazy, explosion-happy teenage girl who ran around with him when he had a hat and a Scottish brogue. He's delighted to see her again, and pleased to discover that she's reached middle age with no signs of growing up. She'd be entirely happy to drop everything in her life and run off with him again, except for two things: her children.

She has a boy and a girl, both teenagers, neither of whom has ever set foot in a schoolroom. They're dangerously smart and impressively impulsive, with some of their mom's habits, but their own individual styles. They have enough sibling rivalry to be entertaining, and occasionally enough to almost get them both killed.

The Doctor, of course, is happy to bring them along too.

I am bored with the Lonely God being the linchpin of existence and kissing everyone all the time. I'd like the next series to be about these two weird kids discovering the wonder and danger of the greater universe, along with their badass punk-as-fuck mother and the best crazy grandpa that ever there was.

I gave up un NuWho a while ago, but I would watch the shit out of that.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...this would get me to start watching again. Absolutely. Whoever takes over next, BRING BACK ACE PLEASE AND THANK YOU.

(Not fussy on the kids, but eh.)

merciful heavens child, this glory will never happen but can you write it???

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I would watch this in a goddamn heartbeat. And hey, maybe Ace could meet up with an old flame along the road. Like, for a random example, Shou Yuing? And then she could introduce her kids to this awesome lady who bonded with her over explosives back in the day.

Given what I've seen in DW interviews, I'd love to see Sophie Aldred as a mad adventurer mother type of character, better yet, the mad adventurer mother Dorothy "Ace" McShane.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Y'know, I might actually watch this show now that someone I actually find attractive is the Doctor now. And I'm like 26. So...yeah, um. I like older men, sue me.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Capaldi looks pretty dashing there!

I'm glad for an older Doctor mainly for the variety.

As for shipping, I've never been super into Doctor/companion shipping at all, but I don't really mind it, either. Age gaps aren't my thing, but the younger companions always seem to act older than they really are and the Doctor is always going to be way older than almost everyone he travels with, so the age gap - real or apparent - doesn't bug me so much. I guess what I'm saying is that I don't care either way of people ship them, but it's still cool the Doctor is over 45 this time around since it's been a while that we've had one who was visibly past early middle age.

I don't care if 10,000 people ship it and write fic for it, I'd just prefer it be subtextual in the show itself.

(Eleven and River should have been lovely, but imo Eleven's acting like a 5-year old about "kissyface" most of the time was something I found very disappointing. (And it made me miss Nine and "dancing")

I think a large part of why people are so happy is they're not expecting any canon sexing between the two. I don't think anyone seriously thought no one would ship them. A lot of people just want lest on-screen romantical tension bewteen Doctor & companionn.

Well it makes ME happy. This was never an issue with Classic Who. Because none of the soap opera nonsense we've had to endure since Teh One Twu Wose hit the screen ever existed in Classic Who.

I am sick of Doctor/companion romances, but I will be incredibly sad if they stop doing them for Twelve, if only because he's the first Doctor they've cast in awhile that I actually find hot.

I'm okay with the age difference but I'd seriously love it if there could be just one show where there is no chemistry between the male and female lead.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
I'm fairly certain that these romances aren't going to stop with 12. If anything, they'll get worse, because it'll be just that much easier for Moffat to come up with his thinly veiled self-insert fanfic with his manic pixie dream girl companion when said self-insert is actually closer to his age.

You know, I never really got a romantic vibe between Eleven and Clara. He's fond of her, and she's fond of him - enough that she'd give him a kiss on the cheek - but not in a romantic way.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
On a purely shallow level, I could ship it. But I hope the series doesn't actually do this because it just sounds like a potential train wreck. Leave all the potential 12/Clara sexytimes to fanfic...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 12:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm so over Moffat and him sexualizing the companions & the Doctor. Just nope, nope nope, that's not what I want to watch.
