You know, I'm like 51% sure that anon message is a troll or a joke. Looks like something some anti-sj blog would send just to laugh at the people who take it seriously afterwards. Just 51% though. You never really know with Tumblr

But yeah, agreed. I can see how ableism can be a real problem (people not taking mental illnesses seriously and so on) but words like 'dumb' being ableist? That's just a lot of whining to me.

It's not a troll post. This is classic SJW "mother-state" nonsense. 1984 come to life.

Yeah. This is basically the whole of Tumblr.

Wow. You uh have issues.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I also get a sarcastic tone from that message, but yeah, I agree with you about SJWs babying people in the name of activism.

I always associated "derp" with the sound of a brain fart. Which makes no sense, I know.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Still, that's how some people do in fact use the word.

I have the same association.

Pretty much how I always viewed it too. Derp and herp derp (or herpa derp) are just moments of stupidity. Something we all suffer from in reality.

I am so happy that Case decided that secrets entirely about social justice qualify as NF. When they're not on the main page, there's less wank about them.

On a side note, the biggest ablism kerfuffle I've seen was the Derpy thing, in which two groups of people with seemingly identical values accused EACH OTHER of being ablist. One side pretty much fell in love with Derpy, and was pissed that people were trying to remove a "positive depiction of a disabled person." The other side compared her to a minstrel in blackface, and was pissed that the first side wanted to keep an "offensive portrayal of a disabled person." It's fine to disagree on what's positive and what's offensive, but when you're calling people bigots for, essentially, agreeing with the ideas you want to promote, it's time to take a step back and reevaluate what you're doing.

as a legit PWD my response is this

For what it's worth, my only objection to that character (in canon, at any rate) is her name. I've had the word "derpy" flung at me disparagingly in reference to my disabilities in the past and I can't see that word as anything but a slur now. Also, the way it's used by many bronies, combined with how they portray her in their fanworks, comes across as less "this character is a positive representation of the disabled!" and more "LOL, retards are funny!" Additionally, the fact that she was not originally intended to be mentally disabled and the fans decided that she was because of her eyes and clumsiness doesn't really help their case in my opinion. But that's just me.

I'm probably going to regret posting this, as it may be a while before I have internet access again and won't be able to see any replies (if any), much less respond. Eh, what the hell.

It varies a lot from story to story. Generally, the ones that call her Ditzy seem to be more positive than the ones that call her Derpy, but the latter doesn't completely rule out a positive portrayal (see: I Just Don't Know What Went Right, a romance between her and Celestia.)

How dare The Internet use such a serious word as "derp" and use it casually! Don't they know how offensive cartoon characters find that word? The historical significance blah blah blah. Yeah, the word was invented by the creators of South Park in 1998. It literally means "oops" or possibly "oh crap."

I get what you're saying, OP. As someone with mental illness apparently I'm supposed to be super offended whenever someone uses the word 'crazy' as an insult or as hyperbole.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-10 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly you fail to understand that some of us with a mental illness or mentall illnesses can be offended or even triggered by that stuff. So good for you on not being offended. Do you want a cookie?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. This.

I thought the Ask was politely worded. If it was sent to me, I'd say, "Oh, I didn't know that hurt people's feelings so maybe I'll look for a different way to say what I mean." After all, it's a kids' show where children with developmental disabilities might find that post and their feelings might be hurt by a bunch of silly nonsense.
