You know, I never really understood why people get so much flack for saying that. It's an extremely common North American thing, so it doesn't even really register with me.

Not the same anon from above! Basically you have to have a certain amount of blood quantum, as in 1/2, 1/4, 1/8th etc; to qualify for official membership in most tribes. This can lead to issues about "not being native enough" along with the additional issues some people have involving whether you "grew up on a rez", how much contact you have with other members of your tribe etc;.

That said it isn't uncommon for many in the USA/Canada, even if they identify as black, white etc; to have a native ancestor somewhere in the family tree if they look back far enough. If your ancestors were living here for generations between 1600-1800, it isn't too unlikely they may have married a member of the native population.

Yeah, that's what I was saying. It's just such a common thing that I'm usually just like "yeah, me too" and kind of shrug and move on to the next topic.

people roll their eyes when people say that because usually it's coupled with some justification for anti-native racism or some bizarre thought that their diluted blood makes them an expert

Yeah, or like Johnny Depp being part Native American and totally assuring everyone that his portrayal of Tonto in the latest version of the Lone Ranger would be "totally respectful". Surprisingly enough, it wasn't.
