Everyone I know (all, like, three of them, so not exactly a statistically viable sample, but still) who says they are a fan of these books are not people I would consider canon Holmes fans and I doubt they'd identify themselves that way, either. They may have read a couple of the more famous stories for school or just to see what Sherlock Holmes is all about, but they never had the interest to read more. I don't think I personally know any canon fans who are also real fans of these books.

Even before I knew all the details you mentioned, I was already turned off by how blatantly Mary Sue-ish all this seemed. It was only later that I found out how wide the age gap was and how Watson is treated and I said "Well, screw that."
