IA. Totally. But I think we had a secret very similar to your opinion just a couple of months ago, so you're definitely not alone in your hate :)

Really? I feel like that's a really common opinion. I find most SH fans (at least, the ones I've met) will put down a fanfiction as soon as Watson is OOC, let alone everything else that happens in this book.

I don't think many actual Sherlock Holmes fans think it's good, just that some non-fans who either don't really know or don't really care anything about Sherlock Holmes find them interesting/fun because of...I'm not sure what, actually, I guess self-insert fantasies hit a pleasure button somewhere? *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
My beta reader loves them but then she loves RDJ Holmes as well. We just don't talk about that, concentrate on the originals.

I haven't read the thing, but boy, does this sound fucking terrifying. I usually make a point of not avoiding reading bad literature, but I think I'll skip this one. I fear the butchering of my favourite characters is going to make me cringe too hard for me to actually read anything.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, here's a quote! Okay, it's a tiny bit paraphrased, but only because I can't find the exact quote by googling for it:

Holmes: "Watson and I never had anything approaching a partnership. When he was with me, he was an extra set of hands, nothing more."

LOL omg anon I did not notice it

that's hilarious

It reminds me of this dude who decided to start a business in publishing but was unsuccessful, having published only one book before going broke; the one book he did publish was Lion Feuchtwanger's Jew Suss, the cover of which proudly proclaimed that the author's name was "Lion Feuchtwagner".

Due to the misspelling, I initially misread it as "The Beekepler's Apprentice," and I was like, "astronomy bees? What?"

Hold on, I mean most of these observations are valid, but as I recal, once we actually meet Watson, she re-evaluates her opinion of him.

Well it is a good example of published fanfic. Just not very good fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah I don't care about any of that except the treatment of Watson. That was the one and only thing that made me put the book down for good.

I agree that your last three points make it sound terrible, but imo there's nothing wrong with 1. I like seeing my favourite world and/or characters through the eyes of another character, I think it can be really interesting if done well.

Also, as a side-note, I've always thought the main character was Watson, not Holmes.

Everyone I know (all, like, three of them, so not exactly a statistically viable sample, but still) who says they are a fan of these books are not people I would consider canon Holmes fans and I doubt they'd identify themselves that way, either. They may have read a couple of the more famous stories for school or just to see what Sherlock Holmes is all about, but they never had the interest to read more. I don't think I personally know any canon fans who are also real fans of these books.

Even before I knew all the details you mentioned, I was already turned off by how blatantly Mary Sue-ish all this seemed. It was only later that I found out how wide the age gap was and how Watson is treated and I said "Well, screw that."

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think part of the reason that I love "Beekeeper's Apprentice" is because I was 16/17 when it came out, so roughly Mary's age, and, well.. it fell right into my own wish fulfillment at the time. Of course, then LRK had to botch it up by having too much Mary and not enough Holmes for my taste in later books (and I actually enjoyed them much more overall pre-marriage than post).

Though I am now highly amused that Mary ends up with her own "migrating wound".. er.. scars. "Locked Rooms" just killed it for me.

As for her portrayal of Watson, I just chalked it up to she chose Jeremy Brett's Homes, and Nigel Bruce's Watson. *shrug* Nigel Bruce's Watson is rather obtuse, in my opinion.

Then again, I'm just a casual fan, not a Holmesian or even a Sherlockian.

As for the age gap? It's not inconceivable for some young women to prefer much older men. *raises hand* Er, I'm no longer THAT young, but you get my point.

I've come to dislike the term "Mary Sue" since people after started throwing it out to dismiss female characters they didn't like.

But in this case it fits.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm an ACD Holmes fan, and I actually like them, not so much for what they are as for what they could have been. As a fanfic writer, I'm always looking for raw material...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a Holmes fan and I like them. The Watson thing is softened hardcore in other books, and while I HATE the romance I don't find Mary as much of a Sue as people like to call her. The stories are good and I don't see anywhere that Mary is made out to be a better detective than Holmes.

Meh, I prefer the pro-fanfic novel where Holmes meets Dracula anway.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Agreeing with everyone who said this series gets recced by more casual SH fans and not the purists. I see it a lot too, and wish the people recommending it would add the caveat that it doesn't have Holmes and Watson as the protagonists, because otherwise it seems a bit misleading.

Um, no, I don't think so

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
IMO, the poor kid was jealous of Dr Watson, to begin with.

And Holmes doesn't fall in love with her until she's almost past marrigiable age by the more of the age they both exist in, anyway.

I just wanna say...

(Anonymous) 2014-02-09 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
How odd it is for me to have a favorite character whom nearly everyone in the fandom, no matter their other differing opinions, rushes to the vigorous defense of when his honor is impugned upon by crap authors.

In so many of my other fandoms, my faves are unappreciated, ignored, or deemed boring and shallow and therefore acceptable targets for misuse, that I pretty much automatically expect to always be in defensive/justifying mode when discussing them. The Holmes fandom's appreciation for Watson pleases me to no end. :)

(WTF library, you usually have better taste than that.)
