I haven't read the thing, but boy, does this sound fucking terrifying. I usually make a point of not avoiding reading bad literature, but I think I'll skip this one. I fear the butchering of my favourite characters is going to make me cringe too hard for me to actually read anything.

Hey, here's a quote! Okay, it's a tiny bit paraphrased, but only because I can't find the exact quote by googling for it:

Holmes: "Watson and I never had anything approaching a partnership. When he was with me, he was an extra set of hands, nothing more."

You know, I think I could actually deal with a book in which Watson actually was a dumbass. It would just a crappy AU.

But I cannot deal with a book that posits that Holmes was the kind of person who would look at a man who was his friend for decades, who saved his life more than once and risked his life, reputation, and freedom for him innumerable times, who looked after his health when no one else was around, who got him off drugs and helped him stay that way, who lived with him and spoke to him when no one else would, who recognized his talents when everyone else sneered and stole the credit, who gave him the fame needed to achieve that level of influence and power to help people, who gave up most of his career to help him, who dedicated the better part of his life to him -- and see just an extra pair of hands.

The irony, I guess, is that King's unintentional character assassination of Holmes is a hundred times worse than her character assassination of Watson.

IA completely (from what information there is in this thread, anyway).

Yup, this. It wasn't enough for the author to exclude Watson entirely, but she goes out of her way to have both Holmes AND Mary dismiss him as a person. I think she sort of backpedals on this a tiny bit in later books, but Watson's still pretty much a brainless buffoon in this universe which, just, you know, NOPE.

Hell to the no. Holmes wouldn't say that. Has the author read the original stories?
